One of my most recent interests is the art of Kirigami and I’m excited to be here with you to share a quick how to on creating these beautiful paper stencils.

I have always loved making paper snowflakes. Each winter I make some for our living room window. This past year I discovered this book: “The Art of Decorative Paper Stencils” by Kanako Yaguchi. I learned to make even fancier paper snowflakes and I discovered the world of KIRIGAMI. I had been making KIRIGAMI all along and didn’t even know it.
KIRIGAMI simply means to cut paper.
The supplies you need are very basic: origami paper (or any other thin paper) and sharp, pointy scissors. When you start making more complex designs you will also need an x-acto knife, a hole puncher and a self-healing mat.
There are various ways to fold the paper. You can even make butterfly and heart folds. Today I will teach you the STARBURST fold. I highly recommend that you make yourself a pattern like this and use it until you’re comfortable making the folds without the pattern. Copy this pattern with all of the details and the folding instructions will make more sense to you.
If you click on the picture, it should show the pattern full-size and you can then print it. I’m sorry the pattern isn’t a perfect square. My scanner wasn’t working so I had to take a picture of it instead.
A. The first fold is the easiest. You just fold the paper in half so that you end up with a triangle. The colorful/decorative part of the paper will be hidden and the white part should be showing.
B. Fold right corner over to fold line #2. See step C for how this fold should look.
C. Fold the same corner back along the fold line as shown (#3).
D. Fold lower left corner over so that the #4s are on top of each other.
E. Fold the pattern in half so that the P will be underneath.
F. Flip it over, draw your pattern (P) and you can start cutting.

I cut the one on the left. I used two different sized hole punchers to do the eyes and the nose. Then I used an x-acto knife to cut the mouth. I always love Sienna’s creations much better though. Nothing beats children’s art!

As you can see, you can make garlands, gift decorations or mobiles with your creations. The bunny one would make a cute Easter card. The possibilities are endless.
