Simple things Sunday – Summer

Friday, June 27, 2014

Simple things Sunday is about slowing down and capturing life’s everyday details. Taking joy in the simple things is the focus and Sunday is the day we gather together to reflect on our experiences from the week and share our photos with each other. #SimpleThingsSunday

Summer Memories

Summertime is for making memories and we’ve been trying our best to make some really special ones! The kids have loved everything to do with staying at the farm. Helping Grandpa with chores, petting the calves, quad rides, playing in the hay bales, rounding up cows that have gotten out. It’s been an exciting Summer so far and it feels like its just barely begun!

What simple moments did you celebrate this week?

-Share your photos with us on Instagram, Twitter, G+, even Pinterest by using the hashtag #SimpleThingsSunday. Stacy on Instagram // Rebecca on Instagram

–Post your photos on the Simple as That Facebook wall anytime! I‘d love to see what’s going on in your world!

-You can also link up here on the blog each weekend starting Saturday nights at 10pm CST!

What is Simple things Sunday?

This weekly photo share is all about taking time to photograph the everyday details that make your life unique, beautiful, and special. We gather here each Sunday to share our photos, to enjoy the beauty found in the ordinary and to be reminded of just how important the simple things truly are. Read all about STS here.

July 2014 Visiting Teaching Printables

Thursday, June 26, 2014

July is nearly here and I’ve got another set of monthly Visiting Teaching printables for you! You can read the July Visiting Teaching Message here: The Divine Mission of Jesus Christ: Advocate and download the printables using the link below.

July 2014 Visiting Teaching Printables

I created two printable bookmarks and a 4×6 printed focused on this month’s visiting teaching message. They can be printed inexpensively at your local photo lab or they’re available in PDF format for easy printing at home.

Some ideas of how to use these printables:

– Print out the bookmarks that your sisters can keep in their scriptures as a reminder of this months lesson.

– Print the 4×6 version and put in an inexpensive photo frame (IKEA frames are great!) and your sisters can switch out   the prints with each months new VT lesson.

– Purchase an inexpensive mini 4×6 photo album for your sisters to collect their 4×6 sized quotes in each month. They will have a wonderful mini album full of inspiration by the end of the year!

If you enjoy these quotes please tell your friends where they can find them by sharing via Pinterest, Facebook and Twitter! Thank you so much!

Tips for Photographing Your Family in the Great Outdoors

Tuesday, June 24, 2014

This post is part of the Outdoor Family Adventure Series. Encouraging families to get active and create lasting memories in the great outdoors!

My first love in photography has always been capturing images of my family but a very close second is capturing the beauty of nature. When we spend time together outdoors, taking images of my family members in our beautiful surroundings and recording the special memories we’re making is so important to me. Some of my favorite photos that I’ve ever taken combine these two loves of mine and today I wanted to share some tips that will help you better photograph your family on your next outdoor family adventure!

Tips for Photographing your Family in the Great Outdoors

Last fall we spent some time in Sedona, Arizona admiring the beautiful red rock landscapes and hiking Bell Rock. We visited the Grand Canyon, explored lava tubes and Montazuma’s Castle on the same trip, but our afternoon spent at Bell Rock was our kids favorite! It is such an amazing area and the kids had a fun time climbing the rocks, exploring crevices and taking in the desert beauty!

Tips for Photographing your Family in the Great Outdoors

Tips for Photographing your Family in the Great Outdoors

Set yourself up for success. Taking just a few minutes to make sure you’re prepared can make all the difference in capturing memorable moments and making fun memories. Give some thought to what time of day you’ll be exploring your intended destination. I love to plan our outdoor activities in the early morning or late afternoon, avoiding the harsh midday sunlight if I can. Make sure kids have had a quick snack, your camera battery is charged, your memory card is empty, etc. These are all things I keep in mind before we head out on a family adventure.

Tips for Photographing your Family in the Great Outdoors

Choose your equipment carefully. My motto when traveling is to keep things simple and this definitely applies to my camera equipment. I typically bring my camera body, one multi-purpose lens that will shoot well in a variety of situations, an extra battery, memory card and my phone. Photographing your family outdoors is a lot different than photographing them at home. You may need to take some extra precautions when it comes to protecting your equipment. I like a padded photo backpack to carry my camera in so that my hands are free while hiking to help kids, to climb or whatever else I might need my hands for.

Tips for Photographing your Family in the Great Outdoors

My husband and I bring our phones with us on all our outdoor adventures and we keep them protected in our  Lifeproof Nuud for iPhone cases. They allow us to take beautiful phone photos and have protected our phones while hiking, swimming, caving and more!

Tips for Photographing your Family in the Great Outdoors

Spontaneous vs. posed photos. When my kids are outside exploring they are in their element and the smiles seem to come more naturally. As we hike or explore I continue to interact, ask questions and have conversations with my kids while I take photos to keep things fun and encourage more natural expressions.

Tips for Photographing your Family in the Great Outdoors

I may point out a particular view and while they look, snap a photo. I tend to lag behind the group and capture images as they make their way down the trail or scale a rock. I take plenty of posed family shots too, but I love to capture my family as they experience their surroundings.

Tips for Photographing your Family in the Great Outdoors

While I like to record our outdoor experiences through my own eyes, I’m also mindful that these family memories are a huge part of my kid’s childhood and want to capture the story from their perspective too. The shot below was taken when my two oldest climbed down to explore this crevice. They thought it was pretty exciting and when they called for me to take a photo of them I happily obliged.

Tips for Photographing your Family in the Great Outdoors

Get everyone in the shot. When we’re outdoors as a family it can be difficult to get a photo of all of us together. My husband and I will often trade off and take a picture of each other with the kids, but its nice to get everyone in the shot once in a while. If you’re traveling with friends have them snap a quick family photo, ask a passerby if you’re comfortable, try a self timer shot or if you have a tripod it’s worth setting it up to get that group shot! Someone’s eyes will likely be closed, not everyone will be looking at the camera but you won’t regret taking that moment to take a family photo!

Tips for Photographing your Family in the Great Outdoors

I’m not afraid to ask a stranger to take a quick photo for us, in fact I keep my eyes out for people around us who are using an SLR camera and appear confident in their photographic abilities. Taking a chance on a stranger really paid off on this shot. Near the top of Bell Rock we met a couple who were taking photos of the scenery and we asked them to take a quick photo for us. This stranger did an amazing job! I need to get this photo framed and on our wall very soon!

Tips for Photographing your Family in the Great Outdoors

Being out in nature as a family is an amazing opportunity to create lasting memories and capture gorgeous photos! When we get home from a trip we enjoy reliving our adventures through the photos we’ve taken and I love knowing that these images will continue to bring back special memories as my kids get older.

I hope these tips will help you capture your next outdoor family adventure! Hashtag your photos on Instagram with #OutdoorFamilyAdventures, we’d love to see what you’re doing as a family to enjoy the great outdoors! Summer Photo Scavenger Hunt for Kids

Thursday, June 19, 2014

Looking for something to fill up those slow Summer afternoons? Get out and explore the world around you with a Summer Photo Scavenger Hunt!

Summer Photo Scavenger Hunt for Kids

I don’t know about your kids, but mine sure love a good scavenger hunt! I can’t count how many scavenger hunts we’ve done lately. They just seem to be the perfect activity to fill up a slow Summer afternoon.

Summer Photo Scavenger Hunt

In our family we particularly like going on photo scavenger hunts. It’s the perfect excuse to get out and explore the world around us. Instead of collecting things along the way {the ones you never know what to do with afterwards} we collect photos that center around a particular theme as we go for a walk or drive together.

Summer Photo Scavenger Hunt

Arm the kids with a disposable camera, a hand-me down point and shoot or let them snap photos with your phone if you’re comfortable and go on the hunt for things like:

-colors
-shapes
-signs
-unique doors
-letters of the alphabet
-animals
-plants
Summer Photo Scavenger Hunt
This is one of the my kids favorite Summer activites and it requires little to know preparation and is very inexpensive. I love that it’s an activity the whole family can enjoy together.
 Summer Photo Scavenger Hunt
The fun doesn’t have to end when your scavenger hunt is over. Once you’ve uploaded your photos you can watch them as a slideshow and enjoy them together over a bowl of popcorn. You could even  print your photos and compile them in a small photo album or create a scrapbook so you can enjoy them again and again!
Summer Photo Scavenger Hunt
We lived on a tiny island for a short time and here’s a peek at some photos we collected while searching for signs on one of our photo scavenger hunts. I plan to put these photos together as a collage and have it framed to remember this beautiful and unique place.
Summer Photo Scavenger Hunt
A photo scavenger hunt is a lot of fun and It’s such a great way to get out and explore your community! Happy photo hunting!
Stay tuned for more tips, ideas and inspiration for enjoying the great outdoors as a family in our Outdoor Family Adventure Series coming next week!

Simple things Sunday – Rainy Day

Sunday, June 15, 2014

When it rains look for rainbows. When it's dark look for stars.

The kids and I spotted this pretty rainbow while driving the other day and had to take a minute to pullover and snap a quick photo. It seems like most photos I’m sharing for Simple things Sunday lately, are snapped with my phone. I really should make a point of getting my big camera out, but for now, I think my phone did a pretty decent job of capturing this gorgeous scene!

Italian Cream Cake Recipe

Friday, June 13, 2014

If you love coconut and pecans you’ll love this  delicious Italian Cream Cake with three layers of fluffy cake, rich icing and crunchy goodness!

Italian Cream Cake www.thecasualcraftlete.com

Hey there! It’s me again, Katie from The Casual Craftlete blog. Thanks for having me once more, Rebecca! I am SO incredibly excited to share my Grandma’s famous Italian Cream Cake recipe with you all today! My grandma was the best cook in the world. Sorry mom, but it’s true. Grandma was the queen of the kitchen and I have so many fond memories of baking with her. This was by far my favorite cake that she made. It’s probably because I love anything with coconut and pecans. This recipe is three layers of fluffy cake, rich icing and crunchy goodness. Ok, enough of the chit chat, let’s get to these amazing recipe!

Italian Cream Cake Recipe TheCasualCraftlete

Let’s start with the cake. This is a pretty easy made from scratch cake batter. First, you start by separating 5 eggs. Place the egg whites in a bowl that is attached to a stand mixer or a medium size bowl if you are using a hand mixer. Then, place the yokes in a separate bowl. Whisk the eggs whites until your get stiff peaks. Transfer to a different bowl and clean bowl and whisk. Cream 1 stick of softened butter, 1/2 cup vegetable oil, and 2 cups sugar together. Add egg yokes one at a time. Gradually add 2 cups of all purpose flour, 1 tea spoon of baking soda and 1 cup buttermilk. Then, add 1 cup sweetened coconut flakes, 1 cup chopped pecans and 1 teaspoon of vanilla extract. Once the mixture is smooth, gently fold in the stiffed egg whites.

Italian Cream Cake by The Casual Craftlete

Pour the cake batter into 3 – 9″ round greased and floured pans. Bake at 350 degrees for 25 minutes or until inserted toothpick comes out clean. Allow the cake to cool completely before icing. If you have cooling racks, place the cake onto them after removing from the oven. I don’t have any so I just let the cake cool in the pans.

Italian Cream Cake TheCasualCraftlete.com

To make the icing mix together 1 – 8 oz package of softened cream cheese, 1 stick of softened butter, 1 box of powdered sugar (confectioner) and 1 teaspoon of vanilla extract until smooth.

Brush the crumbs off the cake and place one cake round onto a cake stand or serving dish. Add a small layer of the icing onto the top of the cake. Just add a little at a time, making sure not to tear the cake. Repeat for all 3 layers. Then, add the remaining icing to the sides of the cake in an even layer. Decorate with coconut flakes and pecans if desired.
