we’ve attempted family photos and we have not once gotten that magical shot I’m always hoping for. You know the one where both kids are standing perfectly still, smiling, looking at the camera, I’m having a good hair day, Randal doesn’t look like he’s ready to kill someone.
😉
Just a few weeks ago my sister came out to take some pictures for us. I got us all dressed up in coordinating outfits, chased after Carson after he was dressed to keep him from spilling something down the front of them. Made sure they were napped, fed. Ready to go. Talked Randal through it – made sure he’d last longer than five minutes. I brought treats to bribe him. Oh, to bribe the kids with I mean.
Oh my goodness. I have a new appreciation for all those moms who have been behind my camera! I tell ya. Tryin to get those kids to look at the camera, not stick their fingers up their noses, get Randal to smile. It was not happening. Needless to say we didn’t get much. There’s a lot of funny ones like this – which probably tells the true story of how it is a lot better than any perfectly posed shot ever could.
Carson wanted Daddy to hold him. Then he wanted mommy to hold him. Randal was telling me “ok. that’s enough” I was mumbling under my breath “Emily look at the camera!” It was quite the ordeal. I tell ya.
So I decided a while ago that if I wasn’t going to get a darling family shot that I could blow up and hang on my wall I’d do the next best thing and I took a favorite photo of each of us and hung it on our ‘family wall.’
I love that wall. It is the only wall in our house that happens to have pictures hanging on it – but that’s beside the point. I love seeing those photos all together like that. That little group of people.
Us.
Our little family.
Everything that matters in the world – right there.

On a similar note, I had to use a separate photo of each of my 3 children on the front of our Christmas card last year, because we could never get a good one of the three of them together (they were 4, 2 & 4 months at the time). Not looking forward to it again this year!

Rhonda is photo-shopping Roman’s head from one picture to another and I don’t love how I look, but that’s how family photos go I guess. I like the four pictures, it’s a good use of that wall!
