I don’t know about you, but we’re super excited for Halloween around here!! They don’t celebrate the holiday locally, but we’re having a little trunk-or-treat with friends tonight at our house and we can’t wait!!
It was a bit of a trick, trying to come up with costumes for the kids this year {and last}. We’ve been brainstorming ideas for weeks trying to come up with a fun theme that the kids could all get excited about. We also needed to come up with something inexpensive and something we could make work with what we had available to us {which wasn’t a whole lot}. 😉
Using foam board and poster board {for the girls wings + spiders legs}, black leggings {I still can’t believe I managed to find some in a local shop!}, pipe cleaners and headbands {for the antennas}, an old pair of dad’s socks {to add long sleeves to dad’s t-shirt for spider legs}, a mixture of shirts + a little yellow dress we already had, a $2 black t-shirt {for the bumble-bee’s stripes, ladybug’s polkadots and ties for the girls wings} and some paints, we were able to pull off a fun buggy theme for Halloween 2011!
We did a little test run/photo session with the costumes on Friday and seeing how excited the kids
were to try them on and show them to Daddy was priceless! 🙂
Being so far from home and family, these fun traditions have taken on a little bit different meaning for us. I’ve tried my best to find a balance between embracing the different cultures we’ve come into contact with here on Statia and also carrying on with our own traditions from back home. They mean so much to the kids and its amazing how dressing up in some inexpensive, homemade costumes and the anticipation of a few halloween treats, can make it feel like home isn’t quite so far away. 🙂

Awwww how cute! Love the ladybug. My son has a thing for ladybugs so maybe that’s for next year – although by then he’ll probably want something less girly . Oh well.
This year we’re dressing up for the first time (Halloween just getting more popular in Germany) and I made no sew magicians costumes out of a black Ikea fleece blanket. I did buy the hats though.

So sweet – my kids are going to be a mermaid, 2 face (batman villain), and Dexter Jexter (apparently there’s a cook from Star Wars). My husband and I are going to put on our old graduation caps and gowns and call it a day. Last year we went as Burger King & Dairy Queen
Cute costumes! My 4-year-old son will be Yoda. I made his costume, and I love how it turned out. I think the best part of Halloween is the handmade costumes.
Your little bugs are adorable! I love your oldest daughters wings. Your blog really makes me think of how to use/buy less “stuff”!

I’d have to say those are some pretty awesome “homemade” costumes. Better than a lot of the store bought ones I’ve seen!
We go through the same thing with our traditions. My two oldest are older so they miss the fun with friends trick or treating. Luckily, its catching on here in the international community, but some residents can spoil the best laid plans. This year the big neighborhood for trick or treating was turning people away at the last minute and my kids were so devastated they were in tears! I couldn’t help feeling like someone had stolen their one hope for a taste of home. But they’ve recovered.

I dressed up this year because my 4 year old granddaughter thought I should. So I decided to dress up as a Bumble Bee (just like your daughter but she is much much cuter) and my guy was a Bee Keeper. We had fun at our family party on Saturday. I don’t know if I will do it again tonight. But Happy Halloween to you and your family.

For the ward party we dressed up as thing 1 2&3 and for trick or treating tanner dressed Up as darth vader. For school we did the thing 1 2&3. I posted pictures on my blog if you want to have a look.
