DIY Kid’s Room Wall Art

Monday, July 14, 2014

I’m so excited to welcome Jen of Plain Vanilla Mom to the blog today! She’s sharing such a FUN and simple DIY decor project that’s perfect for a kid’s room!

DIY Kid's Room Wall Art

Hi There! I’m Jen.  Photographer, blogger, wife, mom, Starbucks fanatic and the list goes on. Mostly at the moment though I’m thrilled to be here guest posting here for you! I looove Rebecca’s blog. Simple Things Sunday is what got me hooked! You will often find me joining in from my blog Plain Vanilla Mom so I hope you’ll pop by sometime.

Today I’m sharing with you a couple ideas for quick and easy DIY kids room wall art. I just love all the custom wall art that can be found online these days (and I’ve bought my fair share) but I figure as often as I’m wielding my camera around I really could probably be doing some of these cool things myself.

DIY Kid's Room Wall Art

My inspiration for this project stemmed from the fact that I have two toddlers with bedroom walls that are in need of a bit of a makeover. I was going for quick and easy (or something ‘Simple’ as we might say) and truthfully it couldn’t have been simpler. (You could do this too! I know you can).

Using just window light and some white foam board for a backdrop I photographed our old wooden alphabet blocks for the personalized name prints and a few crayons in rainbow colors for another. I thought the crayon print might look kinda cool in our playroom.  Really you could let your imagination loose here. What about using legos or even toy cars to spell out a name or initial?

DIY Kid's Room Wall Art

I just kept shooting until I had something that I liked. I really didn’t take long at all. Once my images were edited I had them printed and then framed them using a few frames I had kicking around the house.

DIY Kid's Room Wall Art

All these prints are cute hanging individually but I’m really anxious to mix them into a little gallery wall that I’m working on in each of the boy’s rooms.

Have you ever made your own wall art? I think I’m hooked.

Thank you so much for sharing Jen! For more beautiful photos and simple craft projects, be sure to visit Plain Vanilla Mom here, on Facebook, on Twitter and on Instagram!

Simple things Sunday – Sisters

Sunday, July 13, 2014

Simple things Sunday is about slowing down and capturing life’s everyday details. Taking joy in the simple things is the focus and Sunday is the day we gather together to reflect on our experiences from the week and share our photos with each other. #SimpleThingsSunday

Because I have a sister I will always have a friend.

It’s been such a great Summer! We’re getting ready to say goodbye to beautiful Alberta and head back to Arizona. I hope these girls hold tight to all the fun memories they’ve made this Summer at the farm! It’s been so sweet to watch them playing together and enjoying some of the same things that I did here as a child. I’m so grateful we could spend these few weeks with our families and I’m so grateful for this little family of my own – because anywhere we are together, it is home.

What simple moments did you celebrate this week?

-Share your photos with us on Instagram, Twitter, G+, even Pinterest by using the hashtag #SimpleThingsSunday. Stacy on Instagram // Rebecca on Instagram

–Post your photos on the Simple as That Facebook wall anytime! I‘d love to see what’s going on in your world!

-You can also link up here on the blog each weekend starting Saturday nights at 10pm CST!

What is Simple things Sunday?

This weekly photo share is all about taking time to photograph the everyday details that make your life unique, beautiful, and special. We gather here each Sunday to share our photos, to enjoy the beauty found in the ordinary and to be reminded of just how important the simple things truly are. Read all about STS here.

Printable Nature Scavenger Hunt

Friday, July 11, 2014

With the warm weather comes many unique opportunities to spend time outside as a family. Follow along on our travels as we explore the great outdoors, get active and connect as a family this Summer in our brand new Outdoor Family Adventure Series!

Printable Nature Scavenger Hunt

We love hiking as a family and have found some fabulous family-friendly trails to enjoy together on our travels throughout Canada, Montana, Arizona and Utah! Even though my kids have done plenty of hiking, they still get tired, ask how much further (multiple times) and can sometimes lose interest on our nature walks.

To help our little junior rangers stay motivated along the trail and ultimately reach our destination, I put together a simple Nature Scavenger Hunt and they had so much fun with it on a recent hike, I thought I’d share the printable with you! Scroll down for the link to download.

Printable Nature Scavenger Hunt

While we were in Waterton Lakes National Park last week we did one of our favorite hikes to Blakiston Falls. We’ve hiked to Blakiston Falls many times through the years. It’s a really great trail for the whole family to explore! It’s a short 2.0 km (1.2 mile) hike in the gorgeous Red Rock Canyon. It’s relatively flat and ends in a fenced in lookout over the falls.

Printable Nature Scavenger Hunt

At the start of the trail I paired up one of my older children with a younger sibling and gave them each a copy of the nature scavenger hunt. They were so engrossed with finding the items on their lists that I don’t think I heard them complain once about being too tired or ask if we were there yet!

How to go on a Nature Scavenger Hunt

  • Pick a trail to explore as a family. It doesn’t have to be far from home, it could be right in your own neighborhood!
  • Print off a copy of the Nature Scavenger Hunt pages (there are two versions). I printed mine out on white cardstock to make them a bit sturdier.
  • Place the scavenger hunt pages in plastic page protectors to keep them safe from the elements so you can use them again next time you go hiking.
  • You could bring a dry erase marker or some stickers with you to mark off each item on the scavenger hunt list as you find them.
  • We’re big on not collecting “things” while we hike so we bring along a camera or I let my kids use my phone to collect photos of the things they find and they think this is great!
  • Take things slow. There’s no rush to get to the end of the trail – the journey is often the best part.
  • Take time to notice things around you, point out unique plants, listen for birds, spot flowers, etc.
  • Take time to let the kids be curious and explore.

Hiking is such a great, inexpensive family activity to enjoy in the Summer! I hope you have as much fun with this Nature Scavenger Hunt as we did! If you liked this post you might also enjoy these printable travel games for your next family road trip or this Summer photo scavenger hunt for kids.

Then & Now Photography Tips

Wednesday, July 9, 2014

I’m excited to welcome another special guest as part of our inspiring Simply Photography Series. Moon Ko is a long time friend and I’ve admired her photography skills for years! Today she has some really fun photography tips to help you document the passage of time!

Then and Now Photography. Tips and ideas for documenting the passage of time. #SimplyPhotography

An ordinary kid. On an ordinary couch. On an ordinary day. Right?

Then and Now Photography. Tips and ideas for documenting the passage of time. #SimplyPhotography

You’d be right if you said yes. I said yes when I first came across this photo of my son which I had taken on a snow day this past winter. I took a whole series of shots that morning but this one stood out to me…

And after some digging in my files, I had figured out why.

Then and Now Photography. Tips and ideas for documenting the passage of time. #SimplyPhotography

This is a photo of the same ordinary boy, taken on the same ordinary couch, on an ordinary day. Just six years before

Same couch. Same eyebrows.

Extraordinary.

Then and Now Photography. Tips and ideas for documenting the passage of time. #SimplyPhotography

I had never thought to do Then and Now photos until after I had my last child. I think the thought of knowing he was going to be the last one really encouraged me to take more everyday photos of my family. Plus, he has some darn funny expressions.

Then and Now Photography. Tips and ideas for documenting the passage of time. #SimplyPhotography

Here are some simple tips on taking some fun “Then and Now” photos

Candid & Posed:

Then and Now Photography. Tips and ideas for documenting the passage of time. #SimplyPhotography

Back when my third child was born, I was bound and determined to get the “perfect” shot of them all together, looking at the camera and smiling. Yeah. That wasn’t going to  happen. The baby started screaming and the girls started giggling. The harder he screamed, the more they giggled. And that’s when I took the top photo. One of my favorites to this day of the three of them and I really, REALLY wanted to take another one just like it so I posed them (more like bribed… but tomato, tomahto). So if you have a favorite photo you’ve taken in the past, take another one using the same people and the having them do the same expression. It will be helpful to have treats handy for the willing participants.

The Big (and Little) Occasions:

My oldest recently had her braces taken off after two years. I have to say, it didn’t occur to me to take a photo of her smile with braces on because I was so focused and excited to see her without them. These two photos were taken within hours of each other but what a big difference it shows.

Then and Now Photography. Tips and ideas for documenting the passage of time. #SimplyPhotography

Here’s an example of a somewhat short time span of nine months:

Then and Now Photography. Tips and ideas for documenting the passage of time. #SimplyPhotography

The first and last days of school for my kids. It was only a nine month span but there were some days when I didn’t think school year was ever going to end. As you can see, my middle child started wearing glasses. My oldest no longer has braces and the boy started out bringing his lunch to school but decided near the end of school to start eating school lunches. So much change in such a short amount of time.

Get in the Shot:

I know it’s been said before but honestly…get in the photos.

Then and Now Photography. Tips and ideas for documenting the passage of time. #SimplyPhotography

I like to use a mirror. Not only does this show how big my kids have gotten, it shows how little I’ve changed. Believe me, when you get to be my age, that’s a GOOD thing.

Then and Now Photography. Tips and ideas for documenting the passage of time. #SimplyPhotography

I love “Then and Now” photos because they are such a simple way of taking something that’s been done and just doing it over. Taking photos shouldn’t feel like reinventing the wheel every time you look through your viewfinder. And it doesn’t matter if that view is from a point and shoot, a (d)slr or even your camera phone. Just have fun!

Moon Ko resides in Central KY with her husband and three kids. She works part time as an office manager and as a photographer but her favorite thing to do is take photos of her children. You can see more of her work on her website at www.photographerlexington.com or on her Facebook page.

Outdoor Family Adventures | Writing-on-Stone

Wednesday, July 9, 2014

This post is part of the Outdoor Family Adventure Series. Encouraging families to get active and create lasting memories in the great outdoors!

Outdoor Family Adventures in Writing-on-Stone Provincial Park. Alberta, Canada. #ExploreSouthwestAlberta

A few weeks ago we spent the day at Writing-on-Stone Provincial Park. We’ve been to Writing-on-Stone a few times through the years and every time we go we always wonder why we don’t visit more often! It’s such a neat place to explore as a family!

Outdoor Family Adventures in Writing-on-Stone Provincial Park. Alberta, Canada. #ExploreSouthwestAlberta

You have to see Writing-on-Stone for yourself to really appreciate this amazing part of the Southwest Alberta landscape! Not only are the hoodoos fun to explore but they’re breathtakingly beautiful!

Outdoor Family Adventures in Writing-on-Stone Provincial Park. Alberta, Canada. #ExploreSouthwestAlberta

Writing-on-Stone Provincial Park is located 100 km (62 miles) Southeast of Lethbridge. For those of you thinking of visiting from the United States, Writing-on-Stone is 1 hour from the Sweetgrass/Coutts border crossing – Alberta’s only 24-hour port of entry.

Writing-on-Stone is a World Heritage site that boasts over 50 petroglyphs dating back as far as 7000 B.C! These ancient drawings were left behind by the Blackfoot Native Americans.

My kids favorite thing to do at Writing-on-Stone is wander through and climb around in the hoodoos! They love running along the paths, climbing the rock formations and admiring the unique landscape from the highest vantage point they possibly can!

Outdoor Family Adventures in Writing-on-Stone Provincial Park. Alberta, Canada. #ExploreSouthwestAlberta

It can get hot at Writing-on-Stone during the Summer months (make sure you’ve got hats and sunscreen) but if you’re there later in the evening it’s perfect! Not only because of the cooler temperatures, but because the golden light and longer shadows later in the day are ideal  for taking photos! Check out this post if you’re looking for some simple tips to help you capture memorable photos of your family in the great outdoors.

Lemon Muffins

Tuesday, July 1, 2014

These lemon muffins are simple and delicious! Perfect for breakfast, brunch or as a side with a dinner meal.

Lemon Muffins

Hi Simple as That readers!  My name is Katie from Made to be a Momma where you will find diy crafts, home decor ideas, recipes and more!   I am so excited to be here today sharing with you a delicious and simple lemon muffin recipe!  These muffins are perfect for breakfast, brunch or as a side with a dinner meal! Even my kids couldn’t get enough of them!   I found this recipe in an older Taste of Home Cupcakes, Muffins and More book and it’s easily one of my favorite go to lemon muffins–it’s not overly lemony and not too sweet either! You can also find the original recipe HERE.

LEMON MUFFINS

6 tbsp butter, softened

1/2 cup sugar

2 eggs, separated

1 cup all-purpose flour

1 tsp baking powder

1/4 tsp salt

1/4 lemon juice

zest of one lemon

Glaze:

1 cup confectioners sugar

1 Tbsp. butter, softened

4 Tbsp. milk

1/2 tsp. vanilla extract

Cream together butter and sugar.  Add egg yolks and mix well. Combine flour, baking powder and salt.  Add lemon juice and flour mixture to creamed mixture.  Beat egg whites until soft peaks form.  Fold into batter with lemon zest.  Fill paper-lined muffin cups two-thirds full.  Bake at 350 degrees for 20-25 minutes or until light golden brown or a tooth pick inserted comes out clean.    Mix together glaze ingredients adding more sugar if needed to thicken or more milk if needed to make more thin. Pour drizzle over muffins.
