Making Everyday Beautiful

Boy or Girl?

Friday, July 13, 2007

Since we got pregnant there’s been an ongoing debate in our house as to whether or not we were going to find out what we were having this time around. Randal really wanted to and I really didn’t care to know. I am a little skeptical afterall and let me tell you why….
Sometime about two and a half years ago we went in for an ultrasound and a few days later we found out from our doctor that we were expecting our second baby girl. I made baby bracelets, I started her a journal that I decorated all pink and pretty, I even bought a beautiful pattern for a blessing dress in the hopes that I’d get to sew it before the baby arrived. When the big day finally came for us to meet our sweet girl my bag was all packed complete with pink binky, a darling pink outfit and the same pink blanket we brought Emily home in – all for our baby girl.
I went into the hospital at about 5:30pm and after a relatively fast delivery a sweet little baby was placed face down on my tummy at 7:33pm and I can clearly remember that very moment. The nurses then took the baby to get her all cleaned up and after a moment one of them came over to talk to me and began with “He is so sweet” and I just smiled and said to her “Oh, we had a baby girl but thank you.” She was so surprised and thought she’d made a mistake so she turned back around to where the baby was and all Randal and I could hear was “No, no it’s a boy.” And we just looked at eachother. The doctor had to go over and have a second look, we had to have a second look….and we just laughed and laughed and could not believe it.
Our baby girl was not a baby girl at all! That baby was of course Carson and our poor little man did indeed spend a few of his first hours of life with a pink binky and wrapped in a pink blanket until daddy could go home and get him his rightful BLUE one. We chuckle at the whole experience of Carson’s birth every time we talk about it, it’s a fun memory…a memory that is still very fresh in my mind and is why when they told us this time around that we’re having another…..
GIRL
I can’t help but think there’s always that small chance it could be a boy.

That is lovely news Rebecca, congratulations. What girl name did you have picked out for Carson and are you going with the same name for this sweet baby? I remember when I was having my second baby, my midwife has us convinced that it was having a girl. She was going to be Lucy. It took weeks to get over the surprise, not at all disappointment just a surprise.

My brother and sister in law are expecting their third – they have two boys already and are quite convinced (even though they aren’t going to find out ahead of time) that it is another boy. I would love for them to have a surprise like yours!

Congrats! Thanks for sharing your gender dilemna. I’ve had four girls – and frankly I was relieved the last one was. It makes the toy thing really easy, as well as sleeping arrangements. I even used the exact same blessing dress for each of them (wonder who gets to keep it??) I feel your pain about making the journal and bracelets, but I sure hope you saved them! You’ll definitely (well – POSSIBLY) be able to use them now!

Congrats!! The same thing happened to a friend except they were told it was going to be a boy. They already had 2 girls. My friend, the husband, was soooo excited but then was sooooo devistated when he didn’t get his son. I’m so glad you were able to laugh about it right away. Again, Congrats!!!

oh this same thing happened to us! we were told that we were having a baby girl and when our baby was born the doctors announced that we had a beautiful healthy baby boy! I had to ask my husband to verify because at that moment I was shocked . . . we had nothing but pink; needless to say our son Nicholas spent his first couple of nights with pink lined jammies:) best to you and your family on the upcoming birth!

it’s so weird that our firsts were born on the same day and our second children were supposed to be the opposite of what we were told
    🙂
and now we’re both expecting our third.
    you look gorgeous, rebecca!

    Congrats to you!

I was told, at my first ultrasound, that they were “pretty sure” it was a girl. We didn’t want to take the chance, so I had a 3D ultrasound just to verify.

Basically the baby literally looks like a little puppet — and it is VERY clear to see what the sex is. Don’t know if you have any of these clinics near you, but it definitely was worth it to us!
