DIY Glinda and Wicked Witch of the West Halloween Costumes

Homemade Halloween costumes don’t have to be complicated! Inspired by The Wizard of Oz, these DIY Glinda the Good Witch and Wicked Witch of the West costumes are surprisingly simple to put together, with little to no sewing required.

My daughter knew she wanted to be a witch for Halloween, so we had fun putting together this simple Wicked Witch of the West costume for her. Of course, I couldn’t resist making a sparkling Glinda the Good Witch costume for her little sister too!

I love how these costumes turned out. They were inexpensive, easy to make, and my girls had so much fun wearing them. The full tulle skirts make them look extra special without requiring a complicated pattern or a lot of sewing.

DIY Wicked Witch of the West Costume

Let’s start with the Wicked Witch of the West! This costume is completely no-sew and comes together with a simple black leotard and a full tulle tutu. I added green glitter tulle throughout the skirt for a little extra color and sparkle.

Supplies

• Black leotard
• 4–5 rolls black tulle
• 2 rolls green glitter tulle
• 1-inch elastic
• Scissors
• Witch hat
• Witch broom

A note about tulle: The exact amount you’ll need will depend on the size of your child, the length of the skirt, and how full you want the tutu. I used 4–5 rolls of black tulle and 2 rolls of green glitter tulle for the costume shown here. If you’re purchasing tulle by the yard instead of by the roll, use the finished skirt measurements and fullness you want as your guide.

How to Make a No-Sew Wicked Witch Tutu

Step 1: Measure and cut the elastic

Measure around your child’s waist and cut a piece of elastic to fit comfortably. Tie the ends together securely to create the waistband.

Step 2: Cut the tulle

Decide how long you’d like the finished skirt to be. Cut strips of black and green tulle approximately twice the desired finished skirt length, since each strip will be folded in half when attached to the waistband.

Don’t worry about making every strip perfectly even—a little variation adds to the full, whimsical look of the witch skirt.

Step 3: Attach the tulle

Fold one strip of tulle in half and place the folded loop behind the elastic waistband. Pull the two loose ends through the loop and gently tighten.

Continue adding strips around the entire waistband, alternating black tulle with occasional strips of green glitter tulle.

Step 4: Fill in the skirt

Slide the knots close together as you work so the elastic is covered and the skirt looks nice and full. Continue adding tulle until you’ve worked your way around the entire waistband.

For an extra-full tutu, simply add more strips wherever the skirt looks a little sparse.

Step 5: Finish the costume

Pair the finished tutu with a black leotard, witch hat and broom. Add green face paint if you’d like to complete the Wicked Witch of the West look!

DIY Glinda the Good Witch Costume

This DIY Glinda the Good Witch costume starts with the same simple no-sew tutu technique used for the Wicked Witch costume. Pink tulle, a leotard, and a few sparkly handmade accessories transform it into a pretty Glinda costume that’s perfect for Halloween or dress-up.

Supplies

• Pink leotard
• Pink tulle in a few shades (enough extra for puff sleeves)
• Pink sparkly or glitter tulle
• 1-inch elastic
• Scissors
• Pink glitter cardstock
• Rhinestones or adhesive gems
• Wooden dowel
• Silver glitter cardstock
• Glue
• Pink ribbon

How to Make the Glinda Tutu

Step 1: Make the pink tutu

Follow the same no-sew tutu method used for the Wicked Witch costume above. Measure and cut the elastic waistband, then cut your tulle strips approximately twice the length you’d like the finished skirt to be.

Tie the tulle strips around the elastic, mixing different shades and textures of pink as you go. I added sparkly tulle throughout to give Glinda’s skirt a little extra shimmer.

Continue adding tulle until the waistband is completely covered and the skirt is as full as you’d like.

Step 2: Make the crown

Cut a crown shape from pink glitter cardstock. Before assembling the crown, decorate it with rhinestones or adhesive gems.

Wrap the crown around your child’s head to determine the right size, then overlap the ends and glue or staple them securely together.

Optional: Add a small butterfly embellishment to the front of the crown for a little extra Glinda sparkle.

Step 3: Make the wand

Cut two matching star shapes from silver glitter cardstock. Place the top of a wooden dowel between the stars and glue the two star shapes together.

Wrap the dowel with pink ribbon, securing it with a little glue as you go. Add rhinestones or other sparkly embellishments to the star if you’d like.

Step 4: Add the tulle sleeves

For the sleeves, layer three pieces of the same tulle used for the tutu. Gather the tulle together at one end and sew it directly along the top edge of each sleeve of the leotard, creating a full, gathered puff at the shoulder.

Repeat on the other side, adjusting the tulle until both sleeves look even and full.

I also sewed a butterfly embellishment directly onto the front of the leotard. If you’d rather not sew it on, you could use fabric adhesive instead.

Put It All Together

Pair the pink tutu and leotard with the crown, wand and sheer sleeves. Add sparkly shoes and a few extra rhinestones or embellishments if you’d like, and your little Glinda the Good Witch is ready for Halloween!
