A few weeks ago I was contacted by Mique of 30 handmade days and asked if I’d like to participate in a fundraiser for a good family friend of hers named Sharlie. Sharlie is a beautiful wife and mother who is battling Cystic Fibrosis and who at this time requires a double lung and heart transplant.

I was immediately taken with Sharlie’s story and knew I had to contribute something, however small it may be.

Back in 2007, as a new mother of three, Cystic Fibrosis touched my life. Three weeks after having a sweet, perfectly healthy baby girl I recieved a phone call from my doctors clinic saying they needed me to come in to discuss some test results. When I arrived for my appointment, I took a seat in a tiny exam room, I watched my sweet little newborn sleeping in her carseat in front of me and when the doctor walked in and sat down I had no idea what he was about to tell me. I had assumed the test results were mine, but when he looked at me and told me that one of Addie’s newborn screens had come back positive for Cystic Fibrosis and that she likely had this debilitating disease, nothing could have prepared me.

I knew very little about Cystic Fibrosis at the time, but knew enough to be devastated by the news. During the next few weeks that followed we came to learn more about Addie’s test results. They were not conclusive, she may or may not have CF and further testing was necessary to determine if she had the disease or if she was a carrier. My husband and I travelled to the Children’s Hospital in nearby Calgary where a sweat test was performed and we held that sweet little baby close and prayed together during the hours we waited on those test results. Those were some of the longest hours of my life and when the test results came back that she did not have Cystic Fibrosis I can’t even describe the joy and the thankfulness that I felt in my heart.
There are hundreds of thousands of families out there who do not receive the same miraculous news that we had so desperatley prayed for and I thank my Father in Heaven often for how blessed we are to have four beautiful, healthy children. I can only imagine the difficulties those families dealing with Cystic Fibrosis  face each and everyday. My heart goes out to them and to Sharlie who is facing her own battle with such strength and inspiration and I pray that we can help her, in some small way, to recieve the miracle her and her family are praying for right now.

She is an inspiration.
A fighter.
A miracle.

  1. I don’t know Sharlie personally, but I’ve seen her in my ward building and have since read her story. My husband’s cousins have CF and it pains us to know of others struggling so terribly. Thanks for sharing your creativity for such a great cause.

  5. Wow! She sounds like an amazing person. That must have been unbelievably hard for your family to go through something like that too. Scary. I am off to look at the shop!
