Chocolate Chunk Banana Bread – baking with kids can be fun and it also presents so many wonderful teaching moments! This banana bread is a perfect recipe to try with the kids! In fact, depending on age, they could probably make it entirely by themselves!
Here in Cape Cod, we have gotten a TON of snow! More snow than I have ever seen in my life. It is a gorgeous winter wonderland – so white and peaceful. But we have definitely spent more time indoors than usual. We are always looking for things to do to make the day go faster. One of our favorite “no school today” activities is to bake. The kids and I rarely have long stretches of time together where we can play in the kitchen and try out new recipes. We have made all kinds of things. Cakes, cookies, brownies.
Even though my kids are still little-ish, they have learned a lot about baking in the last few weeks. Proper measurement, why certain ingredients need to be a certain temperature, and how to not over-mix batters. Baking skills that they will have forever. Yes, the kitchen might get a little messier. And it definitely takes more time, but it has been fun and educational for all of us.
This Chocolate Chunk Banana Bread is a perfect recipe to make with kids. In fact, they can make this entirely by themselves. It involves nothing more than a bowl, fork, and wooden spoon. This bread is a family favorite and we have made this bread just about once a week since the snow started.
Teaching her another valuable lesson – clean up as you go.
I have tried many, many banana bread recipes, and this one is by far the winner. I like to add milk chocolate chunks (I buy them online from King Arthur Flour), but any kind you like will work just fine. White chocolate chunks are great here too. I like to bake these in the smaller disposable foil loaf pans. You can bake it in one large loaf, but I find that it doesn’t bake as evenly. I have also made these into muffins and they work perfectly, bake for 18 to 20 minutes.

I’m making Banana Bread tomorrow. I keep feeling the pressure from other cooks/other bloggers not to use so much sugar. Sugar is really getting a bad name right now. I think if I added chocolate chips, I would not add sugar at all because the chocolate chips are already sweet. 1 1/4 cup of sugar is a lot. I would not do more than 1/2 cup of sugar even without the chocolate chips. If I could make a sugar free Banana Bread, I would. Other than that, I think yours turned out great. Your Banana Bread looks perfect.

This looks so yummy. I totally agree about baking with your kids, I have so many wonderful memories of baking with my mum and nan, and have been baking with my two children since they could hold a spoon. I am going to try this recipe for my Dads birthday next weekend. x
