Making Everyday Beautiful

Living Simply So We Can Explore MORE | Our Family’s Travel Bucket List

Sunday, August 14, 2016

Five years ago our family embarked on the greatest adventure we’d ever dreamed up. My husband decided to leave his comfortable job as a chiropractor and go back to school. We sold our beautiful home and most of our belongings.

What came of this experience was a tremendous shift in our priorities when it comes to collecting “stuff” and building the life we really wanted for ourselves and our kids.

Check out a few of the amazing places we have added to our family travel bucket list and see if you may want to add some of these spots to yours, too!

We moved to a tiny island in the Caribbean with very few belongings. We didn’t have much, but we had each other, and through this journey, we learned that’s all that truly matters in life. Family—and the connections we build with each other.

We may not have set out with the goal to simplify, but we experienced the benefits firsthand, and now, years later, we could never turn back. Living with less (stuff!) is a way of life we’ve tried so hard to hold on to since returning from the island.

A big part of my mission to "collect moments, not things" is travel. And with only a couple of years left with all four of my kids under one roof, I'm realizing that now is the time... What's on *your* family's travel bucket list?

It’s difficult at times….for sure! As parents we want so much for our kids, and it’s hard to remember in today’s world that our love for our children is not measured in how much we give them.

Over the last five years, our family has made a shift from buying belongings to spending our money on things of greater value to us: experiences. We want to make lasting memories as a family and to provide our kids with opportunities to learn and grow and stretch themselves.

Traveling and adventuring together in the outdoors has facilitated all of this and more. We’ve been some exciting places as a family and have many more we’d like to see and explore together.

A big part of my mission to "collect moments, not things" is travel. And with only a couple of years left with all four of my kids under one roof, I'm realizing that now is the time... What's on *your* family's travel bucket list?

Here are six places we’re dreaming of visiting while our kids are all still under our roof. Each destination would allow us to connect with each other and with the majesty of nature, add to our album of treasured family memories, and remember the benefits of living simply.

Our Travel Bucket List | Outdoor Family Adventures

1. Prince Edward Island

We want to do more exploring in our home country of Canada. We’ve visited Banff National Park in Alberta the past two summers and it’s always a treat! Canada has so much natural beauty to offer and we’ve always wanted to see Prince Edward Island and the maritime provinces.

I’ve got three girls and you better believe we’re Anne of Green Gables fans. It would be a dream to see the setting of these well-loved books in person and visit the birthplace of Lucy Maude Montgomery!

We’re drawn to Prince Edward Island for it’s picturesque scenery, it’s rich history and it’s tranquil beaches.

2. Australia

I had the amazing opportunity to visit Queensland, Australia, in June 2011 when I won a blog competition and was one of ten bloggers selected to visit this gorgeous corner of the world and learn from the best, Darren Rowse of Problogger. I easily fell in love with Australia, from its pristine beaches to its cuddly animals to its wonderful people.

After coming home and sharing all about my experiences in Australia with my kids, they feel as if they’ve been there, but it’s my dream to bring the whole family one day so we can all experience Australia together.

The only thing that could have possibly been more amazing than seeing Australia would be having my family to share it with.

3. New Zealand

We got a taste of the recreational vehicle lifestyle on our trip from Arizona to Yosemite and out to the Pacific coast, and we are hooked! We’ve heard the way to travel in New Zealand is by RV, which is right up our alley.

We’d love to experience the culture, tropical rainforests, and rich history of New Zealand. I mean, how cool does this sound…. Top Family-Friendly Experiences in New Zealand?!

4. Hawaii

My husband and I escaped to O’ahu in February (our first real vacation just the two of us in five years) and we had such an amazing time! We loved the island and the variety of experiences there were, from beautiful hiking trails to warm, sandy beaches to top-notch entertainment (such as at the Polynesian Cultural Center) and incredible adventures, such as the Climb Works zip line.

Of course, no matter what we did, we kept saying to each other, “The kids would LOVE this!” And so Hawaii makes our family travel bucket list. We’d love to show the kids what we loved so much about O’ahu and to experience some of the other beautiful islands with them as well!

5. Alaska

The type of vacation you can enjoy in this beautiful state includes all of our favorite things—snow, mountains, glaciers, and observing wildlife! Plus, an icy landscape provides such a unique experience for hiking and exploring.

Last summer had such a great time exploring the Icefields Parkway and getting up close and personal with the Athabasca Glacier in Banff National Park that we just know Alaska would be the perfect destination for our family.

6. Costa Rica

International travel can be expensive for a family of six, but in researching vacation spots, Costa Rica keeps coming up as one of the more affordable destinations. It’s exotic—but safe—and has something for everyone: adventure activities for the thrill-seekers, lush rainforests for the nature-lovers, beaches and beautiful resorts for those who just want to relax.

We have family who has lived in Costa Rica and others who have visited this beautiful part of the world and have highly recommended that we visit! My kids would love to see toucans, sea turtles and monkeys in their native habitat—a big change from the elk, raccoons, and livestock we’re used to seeing up north!

We may not live on a tiny island in the middle of a vast, warm sea anymore, but visiting places like the six destinations above helps me feel like we’re holding on to the most important lesson we learned while there: living with less allows us to make more of our lives than we would have otherwise imagined.

I’m definitely open to adding a number 7 or 8 (or 9 or 10…) to this list. What destinations are on your family’s travel bucket list?

Hi Rebecca: I´m Mirys, from Brazil, and I´m a HUGE fan! Of your blog, of your family, of your point of view! I`ve being reading you for a couple of years and I sign your feedbuner to keep me updated when you write something new. The problem is… I never come here (on the blog) so I never leave a comment. Sorry… I should let you know that I realllllllyyyyy enjoy your writing, your adventures, your recipes, your pictures (oh my, your pics!!!). You have great ideas about living and I think your kids are very lucky to have you and your husband as parents! Congrats!

On my personal list of places to go with my kids (I have 2 = 9yo and 11yo) I have: Atacama´s desert (Chile), Machu Pichu (Peru), Perito Moreno (a glacier in Argentina – have you seing it??), the desert of salt (Bolivia), Canada and its gardens (always dreamed about it… but ended up living in France, when I was 22) and the castles in the countryside of Germany and France. But… reading your list… I know I´ll have to extend mine!

Kisses and blessings from Brazil (Yep! You have readers here!)

Hi Rebecca, you don’t want to miss out on PEI. It’s an outstanding place to visit. We went there on our honeymoon. And all the east coast provinces and eastern United States are so beautiful and amazing for food, scenery, history and fun. Growing up there, it’s where my family vacationed. As an adult, it’s where I’d like to take our family. We also hope to go on a Disney Cruise in 1-2 years from now.

I too have made the choice , as of this year and going forward, for a Christmas of less stuff and filled with the gift of more experiences shared together. I’m asking for grandparents to give our kids $ towards a travel experience to a zoo or aquarium, rather than another Lego set.

I’m wondering how you budget and save. Do you shift what you’d in the past have budgeted for Christmas and instead save it in a travel savings budget/account?

Oh you have given me the travel bug!!

I LOVED Prince Edward Island – it is so beautiful. I have always been an Anne of Green Gables fan (still am!) so I dragged my poor (now) husband around to everything green gables. I guess he must really love me because we had only been together for a year or so back then 🙂

You have some amazing places on this list. With 2 young kids we find it hard to even get away for a weekend, but you have inspired me to think about more weekends away, even if they are just camping trips nearby in my own very beautiful part of the world.

    Thanks!

Loving your blog as I work hard at getting rid of the stuff we have accumulated. I feel like it is just getting in the way- so it needs to go!! The challenge is when family members don’t want to let go of the “treasures” that have lived in a box for years. We are off to PEI tomorrow from NS to visit family, it is still one of our favourite road trips. Hawaii is my bucket list destination.

Our family bucket list looks very similar, except no PEI as my husband is from the east coast so we have spent lots of time over there and it is a lovely spot to go with children.
We also want to see Iceland, and would love to take the kids to Argentina. I lived there when I was 17 for just over a year and then took my husband for some adventure travel when I was pregnant with our first. We would love to take the kids and show them this beautiful country and introduce them to my friends.
My 5 year old wants to go to Copenhagen to eat at Noma as part of her bucket list (we have been watching lots of the cooking and chef documentaries on Netflix together).

When you visit Australia my suggestion would be to leave the big, more popular cities behind and explore some lesser known regions. Explore the outback and regional cities as well as the beautiful Sunshine Coast beaches.

Excellent bucket list!!! New Zealand and Alaska are on our’s as well. We are also thinking about Iceland, Machu Pichu, and Patagonia although we will probably stagger this out a bit as our daughter is only 2 yrs old and I think she would enjoy some of those trips more a little bit older.

It’s not a place but for the holidays this year when we both have a good amount of time off we are going to book a last minute flight (like the day before) – whatever deal is best and just go and make the most of it. It’s a totally different kind of trip for us and I’m super excited to see if I can muster up the courage to be spontaneous!

That’s a great list! New Zealand, Australia, and Alaska are on my list as well. I went to Alaska as a teenager with my parents and it was eye-opening.

I would love to bring my kids on a trip to Iceland/Copenhagen/Sweden. They’re all countries that are super respectful of children and welcome them in a variety of places. The natural beauty is incredible and there’s so many possible outdoors activities. In addition, Iceland Air offers a deal where if you take a flight to Europe, you can stop over in Iceland for free!

This is wonderful! Good for you guys. I also raised my kids around the world and they are amazing young adults now doing fabulous things. I’m just on a year long backpacking trip across SE Asia with my youngest who is 17. I’ve just started a blog and would love some feedback.

Wishing you and you family all the best!
