What clothes to pack when you travel

When it comes to getting ready for vacation, putting together a packing list that isn’t too long, yet includes all the travel essentials, can be tricky. I find it particularly challenging to pick out what clothing and accessories to bring along without overloading my suitcase. When getting ready for my trip to Queensland, Australia a few weeks ago I put a lot of thought into what I wanted to take with me. I wanted to pack as light as I could, but I also needed to be prepared for a range of activities from boating and snorkelling to evenings out at gorgeous restaurants.

 In hindsight, there were a few thing I wish I’d brought with me and others I found out I didn’t need at all. Today I thought I’d share a list of things I used most often while in Australia. This list includes things I regularly use at home, items I purchased especially for my trip or was sent from the companies DownEast Basics, Jo Totes and Fresh Produce to try out.  I have since added all these things to my list of warm weather travel essentials and I know I’ll pack them with me again and again on future vacations.

Bringing a variety of layering tees or tanks while travelling is a must. If the weather is cooler than anticipated, adding a layer underneath your clothing is an easy way to add warmth. If the weather is hot, but you still need to wear something underneath, consider a demi tee or tank. You get the layered look without the extra bulk of a full shirt underneath. These tanks + demi-tanks from Shade are my favourite layering items! I packed three when travelling to Queensland and got so much use out of them.

When I’m travelling it’s important to me to be comfortable and when it comes to 24+ hours of flying to get to your destination, believe me, you want to wear something that is breathable, soft and stretchy. I wore yoga pants on all my flights to and from Australia and they were heavenly! I also purchased a vest top and the two pocket long shorts from One Tooth, a Canadian company I just discovered, that sells affordable and stylish yoga fashions. The two pocket long shorts are a new favourite of mine, I love the length. They were great for pulling over my swimsuit and for lounging around in my hotel room. I think their short shorts would make great swimsuit bottoms if you’re looking for a little extra coverage. If working out is a priority for you while on vacation One Tooth has a wide range of workout gear for men and women and their prices are great! I also noticed my One Tooth shorts dried really fast, which is something to look for in clothing if you’re travelling to a humid climate.

When travelling to locations where you’ll be spending time at the beach consider quick dry, versatile and comfy clothing. Being able to go from suntanning to shopping at the local shops is as easy as pulling a cute skirt or coverup over your swimsuit. Don’t forget to pack a cardigan or light jacket for breezy evenings at the beach. It was winter in Australia when I was there and even though temperatures didn’t vary much from a typical Canadian summer, I definitaley found myself getting cool at night or on boat rides after I’d been in the water. Fresh Produce carries a wide range of casual and stylish vacation clothing and I was able to try out a few of their clothes while in Australia. My favourite item was the Coastal Wrap Cardigan in Oyster. It was comfy, could be dressed up or dressed down and was just what I needed if I was feeling cold. I packed quite a few swimsuits with me to Australia but only ended up using 2-3 of my favourites. The ones I used the most were ones I was the most comfortable in – they had good coverage, fit well and looked cute. My current favourite suit is the Roxy Bohemian Sunset Tankini. I just love the simple stripes and how it fits. We also have the striped ruffle one piece for my 9 year old and love it on her. I was so happy with my Roxy swimsuit that I recently tried out a pair of their new wave sandals and have to say they’re super comfy! 

DownEast Basics is another company that carries a lot of cute swim fashions. I haven’t tried any of these out personally, but browsing through their site for cute summer swim stuff, these items caught my eye:

lightweight and multi-use footwear

I purchased a pair of Merrell Lithe Glove Barefoot Running Shoes for my trip to Australia and I couldn’t be happier with them. I was in need of a pair of running shoes anyway and the fact that these shoes would be good for a variety of different activities had me sold. I wore them walking long distances through airports, zip lining in the Daintree Rainforest, ocean kayaking and anywhere else I could. I was really happy with how comfy they are, how fast they dried when they got wet and how lightweight and compact they are. Packing along a quality, comfortable pair of shoes while travelling is definitely a must!

Not everything I brought with me to Queensland could be casual, there were evenings out to dinner and beautiful art galleries to explore and I needed a few dressy clothing items. DownEast Basics sent me this darling Amy Bee skirt in Dubarry and it couldn’t have been more perfect. I paired it with a layering tank + a cute cardi and was set to go out on the town. I love the color, it took up very little room in my suitcase and did I mention it has pockets! I love this skirt and I’m so excited to add it to my summer wardrobe.

I didn’t bring a lot of accessories with me on my trip, but one thing I couldn’t have lived without was my cute Jo Totes camera bag. I have the Gracie Bag in butterscotch and not only is it a functional camera bag but it doubles as a purse as well. As a photographer, I want to carry my camera with me everywhere I go,but I don’t necessarily want to carry an extra bag with me to do so. The Gracie bag makes it so easy to carry my camera with everything else I would typically carry in my purse from my iPad, sunglasses, wallet and when I have the kids – diapers and wipes. I recently made a short trip to Dallas with my Gracie bag and one other piece of carryon luggage and I was so surprised at how much it was able to hold! These are some of the most used items I packed with me to Australia and back. I was really pleased with the purchases I made and was so impressed with the DownEast Basics and Fresh Produce clothing I was able to try!

Simple things Sunday Number 88

We’ve had a crazy week with the end of school and all the activities that come along with that. Soccer ended, the kids ran in their second kids marathon and to finish the week with a bang we took a trip to the Calgary Zoo with some of my husband’s family. It was the perfect way to kick off the summer. The weather was beautiful, it wasn’t too crowded and the kids had a blast with their cousins!

We drove about 3 hours to get to the Calgary Zoo and it was totally worth the drive. If you’re anywhere in the area I would totally recommend making a trip this summer! It’s a gorgeous Zoo and the penguin exhibit they have right now is so fun. It was my favourite stop of the day and my kids are officially smitten with the cute little penguins! Capturing Real Life: Printable Photo Checklists

Today I thought I’d share an exclusive little peek into the book with ya’ll. These are pages from the book that aren’t shared on the Ella Publishing website. There is just so much info packed into this 70 page eBook and I want to give you a taste of what’s inside.

One of the things I enjoyed sharing in the book are the photos that illustrate the story behind how I got the shot. It’s not often that I get my camera out to capture a perfectly sweet moment where I’m not met with some challenges – be it lighting issues, an uncooperative subject, etc. See the series of images taken above for instance, illustrating the outtakes that lead up to THE shot.

I’ve also included a section in the book titled “enhancing real photos” which talks a bit about photo editing and subtle image enhancements. I’ve included step by step photo examples using various photoshop tools and the Simple Fixes: Actions for Photoshop and Photoshop Elements.  For even more information about the Simple Fixes action set and what they can do check out this post.

Another thing that I’ve included it the book that I’m really excited about are some photo checklists. I’ve created several printable photo checklists through the years for anything from summer time photo ops to travel photo ideas and these lists have been some of my most popular downloads here at Simple as That.  When writing my eBook I wanted to include some exclusive photo checklists and inside you’ll find:

Tips for taking photos with toddlers

When it comes to getting in photos with our kids, there’s nothing quite as ‘fun’ as attempting to get a good photo with a toddler. 😉 They’re busy, they’re curious and don’t often want to slow down to have their photo taken.
Last year a quick beach session with my then 18-month old daughter Alivia didn’t exactly go how I’d planned. I wanted some beautiful mother daughter photos on the beach at sunset. She didn’t. We ended up with a whole bunch of shots like the ones pictured above but with a little bit of effort we also managed to get a few keepers. Read on to find out some of my tips for getting in photos with your toddler.

How did I convince my toddler getting some photos with mom would be a lot funner than she thought? I didn’t, in fact, I gave up. We put the camera away, took her pretty dress off and just let her play in the sand until she’d had her fill. I quit forcing it and just let her call the shots. It took me a little while to let it go but…

An hour or so later, when she was tired of playing we had a little snack, got cleaned up and put her dress back on for take two. You can’t tell in the pictures, but she still had sand all through her hair. 😉
Letting your toddler have a little bit of time to play time in the area of photos can make them a much more willing photo subject. After some play time, my daughter had seen all there was to see at the beach already and wasn’t so quick to run away from mom to go explore.

We played catch the photographer and this sure brought out the smiles. Alivia’s big sister was behind the camera and when I whispered to Alivia “let’s go get Emily” and started to run towards her it was all giggles and smiles. {See center photo in the outtakes collage above.} When you make looking at the camera a game it engages your toddler and draws out genuine smiles and interactions.


If you’re in the photos with your toddler talk to them, play games with them, ask them questions. I asked Alivia “can you see a boat in the water?” “can you count the boats? and Emily was able to capture that first shot of both of us looking away from the camera.

For another shot I asked Alivia where her hands were. I asked her where my nose was, where her nose was, etc. and we were able to capture some photos of the two of us interacting with each other. They turned out to be some of my favourite photos from the session.


Try playing a little peek-a-boo with the camera. I whispered to Alivia “can you scare Emily {the photographer}?” That little phrase CAN YOU can really work some magic when it comes to photographing young children. 

As you can see, these photos didn’t come easily. Our sessions went nothing like I’d planned and we certainly had more outtakes than we did keepers in the end. But the few precious photos we did capture were so totally worth it! Toddlers can be tricky photo subjects, especially when they’re your own, but with a few little tricks up your sleeve capturing darling photos of your little one is totally doable!

Simple Fixes Actions for PS + PSE by Addy Lane

A couple of years ago I discovered a set of Photoshop Actions that forever changed the way I edited my photos. I’ve always been a “less is more” kind of girl when it came to post processing and found a lot of actions I tried were just too much for my taste. As soon as I discovered Addy Lane actions I knew I’d found the perfect fit for me!
Christy Williams is the creative talent behind Addy Lane and the actions she creates for both Photoshop and Photoshop Elements users are truly stunning. I began using her actions on client images and photos I shared on my blog and I loved the touch of vintage they added without being too overdone. I’ve used Addy Lane’s actions almost exclusively on a lot of the images you see posted here at Simple as That, in fact, they’ve become such a part of my signature style I don’t know what I’d do without them. 🙂
When ideas began forming for my next eBook, I thought it would be fun to offer a set of PS/PSE actions to go with and I immediately turned to Christy of Addy Lane to help me put this idea into reality. As we discussed the needs of the beginner photographer, common problems one can encounter when editing photos  and tested several versions of the actions, the Simple Fixes Action set came together and I couldn’t be happier with it!
This basic set of actions is so simple to use and combats some of the most common problems that one can run into when editing photos. They are a great base set of actions, in fact, I find myself using them more and more when editing my everyday photos. They’re simple and concise and I really like that about them. Follow along with me as we explore a little of what the Simple Fixes Actions can do and how, when paired with my latest eBook Real.Life.Photography., they can turn your everyday moments into magical memories!
Simple Fixes Actions Step by Step:
1. See the original photo in the upper left corner? What I noticed immediately was that my daughters hands were slightly darker than the rest of the image.
2. I used the SIMPLY LIGHT/DARK action and with a few brush strokes brightened up the hands and also darkened the dandelion she was holding.
3. After touching up these two little problem areas I then applied the SIMPLY BOOST action.
4. I loved the contrast the Simply Boost action added to the photo, but it really accentuated the redness in the skin tones. I used the GOODBYE RED action and with a few brush strokes eliminated some of the redness of the hands and that was it. You can see these were all very subtle edits to the image but when viewed overall you can see the difference they made.
Once you’ve mastered the use of the Simple Fixes Actions you can take your photos a step further and create beautiful, vintage looks with Addy Lane’s more advance action sets. Here is the same image above included in this series just edited using Addy Lane’s Story Tellers Collection instead.

this week’s simple thing:

These past few weeks have been filled with sun, sand and adventure but there really is nothing like coming home. I missed these little munchkins and was so happy to get home to them. My Aussie adventure doesn’t hold a candle to snuggles in bed and an impromptu picnic at the park with the ones I love. 🙂
