5 Quick Tips for Capturing Beautiful Fall Photos

Wednesday, September 10, 2014

It’s Fall and as a photographer, is it any wonder that I love this season so much? Golden hues and rich colors make for breathtaking photo backdrops. With school starting and Halloween right around the corner, opportunities for capturing precious memories are all around. There is just so much beauty to capture this time of year!

5 Quick Tips for Capturing Beautiful Fall Photos

Today I’m sharing 5 quick tips that will help you capture beautiful photos this Fall.

Look for Color. When it comes to capturing beautiful Fall photos, it’s all about the colour! Look for locations with lots of trees. The changing colours of the leaves provide a gorgeous backdrop for portraits and family group shots alike! To keep those beautiful Fall background colours from overpowering your image, position your subject a few feet away from the background. This will add depth and natural background blur and allow your subject to stand out, while still infusing that beautiful colour into your image.

5 Quick Tips for Capturing Beautiful Fall Photos

Time of day. When it comes to capturing beautiful Fall photos it’s important to pay attention to the time of day you shoot.  Taking photos a few hours before sunset (the golden hour) will enhance and intensify the already beautiful color tones that can be found in nature at this time of year.

5 Quick Tips for Capturing Beautiful Fall Photos

Get Creative. Fall is a perfect time to get creative with your photo composition and perspective. Try positioning your subject to the far left or right of the frame instead of in the center. Try shoot from above, below or the behind your subject. The slightest changes in perspective can make all the difference in taking a Fall image from ok to outstanding!

5 Quick Tips for Capturing Beautiful Fall Photos

Keep it simple. There are so many colors and textures that come into play in your Autumn photos that it’s easy for the eye to get overwhelmed with all this detail. Simplifying your images by picking and choosing what information to include can do a lot to hone in on your subject. Use framing, background blur (adjust to a wider aperture), color contrast or simple composition to really make your subject stand out.

5 Quick Tips for Capturing Beautiful Fall Photos

Zoom in. Don’t forget about the smallest details that make this time of year unique. Zoom in and allow these details to take center stage in your photos. You can do this by getting closer to your subject, by using a zoom lens or by cropping during post processing.

5 Quick Tips for Capturing Beautiful Fall Photos

I created this Fall Photo Checklist a few years ago filled with 50 photo ideas + photography prompts to help you capture Fall. You can download my Fall Photo Checklist for free right here or take a look at the printer friendly versions of all 8 of my photo checklists available in the shop!

5 Simple Tips for stress-free Homework Time

5 Simple Tips for stress-free Homework Time – Keep homework time stress-free with these 5 simple tips that have helped our family!

5 Simple Tips for stress-free Homework Time

We all know how hectic after school time can be and getting kids to sit down and focus on their homework is a daily battle that we all have to face as parents. I’ve so been there! After nagging, reminding….even forcing my kids to sit and get their homework done for too long, we started to make some changes that have helped our family.

Below you’ll find some simple tips that have made homework time more manageable in our home.

1. Have a snack.  Having a snack prepared for when the kids get home has made a big difference for us in cutting down on the chaos that comes with after school. I like to have a few healthy choices laid out on the table when the kids get home, my preschooler loves helping me set this out and when everyone arrives home I can focus on them and not snack. Snack doesn’t have to be elaborate. I like it to be something simple and healthy that the kids can eat while they work on their homework. Pretzels, apple slices, grapes, cheese strings. Sometimes I make a yummy batch of their favorite muffins. Getting the kids refueled after school is important and having a snack prepared ahead of time helps us get right down to business and get homework done!

5 Simple Tips for stress-free Homework Time

2. Keep Homework supplies Handy. Keeping homework supplies well stocked and in a central location has really helped us cut down on the amount of time we spend doing homework each afternoon and eased the stress of after school time. When the kids came home they used to spend 5 or more minutes searching for a pencil or other supplies they needed to complete their work, not to mention getting distracted at some point during their search. I set up a very simple and inexpensive homework station in our home that houses all things homework related – from filing the kids school paper work, to supplies like clipboards, pencils, erasers, crayons, rulers, etc. I keep these items inside one of the baskets in a medium size craft caddy. Everything is located right next to the table where we do homework and the kids know where to find everything they need.

3. Have clear expectations. Our kids know that when they get home from school it’s clean up and put away their school things, have a snack and complete their homework before screen time or playing with friends. After countless battles with getting kids to turn off the tv, or trying to gather them in from outside playing with friends to finish homework, this is what works for us. Without the distraction of tv or screens, homework gets done quicker and getting to watch a favorite show or go play with friends is just the incentive they need to stay on task and get their homework done quickly.

5 Simple Tips for stress-free Homework Time

4. Activities for younger siblings. If you have preschoolers in your home it can be tricky to devote your time to helping older siblings with homework. What I’ve found works for my preschooler is to have an activity book set out with us at the table while the big kids do their homework. This is a special activity book that only comes out at this time of day and it’s become a special daily ritual that she enjoys!  She loves feeling like she’s a part of everything and doing her “homework” with the big kids, all the while she is occupied so that I can focus my attention on the older kids.

5 Simple Tips for stress-free Homework Time

5. Develop a routine. Find an after school routine that works for you and stick with it. The key to having a stress-free after school time for our family has been having a regular routine, which includes putting shoes, backpacks and lunch supplies away first thing when the kids arrive home. Placing homework and papers at their spot at the table where we do homework. The kids sit down for snack and start on homework while they eat. We’ve fine tuned this routine and practiced it. We keep things the same and consistent and because the kids know what’s expected when they get home from school it’s taken the nagging from me out of the equation.

5 Simple Tips for stress-free Homework Time

I hope these tips can help you to develop an after school homework routine that works for your family!

Hope, an Anchor to the Soul

Sunday, September 7, 2014

Happy Sunday everyone! Just popping in to share a favorite scripture and printable with you! I’m excited to make this a new tradition the first Sunday of each month, as a group of blog friends and I join together to #sharegoodness!

Hope, an anchor to the soul

During family scriptures one morning this week, we read this verse.

“Wherefore, whoso believeth in God might with surety hope for a better world, yea, even a place at the right hand of God, which hope cometh of faith, maketh an anchor to the souls of men, which would make them sure and steadfast, always abounding in good works, being led to glorify God.” – Ether 12:4

I love this scripture so much, I wanted to turn it into a printable that I could pin up on the fridge where I could read it often. We all have struggles and as I’ve dealt with the things that have come my way, it’s been my hope in the Savior that has gotten me through and brought me peace, even in the most difficult times.

You can download an 8×10 or 3×4 printable of the scripture by clicking the link below.

Hope, an Anchor to the Soul Printable

This talk by Elder James E. Faust focuses on this message of Hope and is such a powerful testimony to me of the love the Savior has for each of us and in it he shared this quote by Samuel Smiles:

“Hope is like the sun, which, as we journey towards it, casts the shadow of our burden behind us. Hope sweetens the memory of experiences well loved. It tempers our troubles to our growth and our strength. It befriends us in dark hours, excites us in bright ones. It lends promise to the future and purpose to the past. It turns discouragement to determination.”

I just love that and pray that as a new week starts I can find peace and comfort in my challenges and turn discouragement into determination through the hope I have in my Savior.

I’ll be sharing more inspiring quotes the first Sunday of each month, so watch for those! In fact, check out a list of 8 more printables and uplifting messages from around the web at the bottom of this post!

Simple things Sunday – Daughter

Sunday, September 7, 2014

Simple things Sunday is about slowing down and capturing life’s everyday details. Taking joy in the simple things is the focus and Sunday is the day we gather together to reflect on our experiences from the week and share our photos with each other. #SimpleThingsSunday

What Heaven Sees in YouThis girl of ours had milestone week! In the Mormon church, when you turn 12 years old, you’re able to attend certain aspects of Temple service and this past week Emily was able to go for the first time. It was such a special experience and I’m so grateful her Dad and I could be there with her.

Please indulge this proud Mom as she gushes for a little minute…

I’m incredibly proud of this beautiful girl and the choices she’s made in her life that have lead her to this important point. There’s a song I love, called What Heaven Sees in You. As a Mom of 3 girls it’s always held a special place in my heart and the first two lines of the song are especially dear to me.

“Sent to this Earth, you were saved through the ages for this day and time. Child of great worth, child of promise, daughter of the Divine.”

As I look at the girl before me, who has blossomed into a beautiful young woman, seemingly overnight, I hope and pray that she will always (always) remember her great worth. Remember that she is a daughter of a Father in Heaven who loves her. That her potential is far reaching and Eternal. I hope and pray that knowledge will stay with her through life’s ups and downs and that she will continue on the path that she’s on and share goodness wherever she goes!

This months printables are all 4×6 size. They can be printed at your local photo lab or they’re available in PDF format for printing at home on cardstock.

September 2014 Visiting Teaching Printables

“In visiting teaching we reach out to each other. Hands often speak as voices can’t. A warm embrace conveys volumes. A laugh together unites us. A moment of sharing refreshes our souls. We cannot always lift the burden of one who is troubled, but we can lift her so she can bear it well.” – Elaine L. Jack

September 2014 Visiting Teaching Printables

“Our Savior has taken upon Himself … our pains and our suffering and afflictions so that He can know what we feel and how to comfort us.” – Linda S. Reeves

September 2014 Visiting Teaching Printables

“I will not leave you comfortless: I will come to you.” John 14:18

Some ideas of how to use this months printables:

– Print them out so that your sisters can keep in their scriptures as a reminder of this months lesson.

– Put the 4×6 prints in an inexpensive photo frame (IKEA frames are great!) and your sisters can switch out   the prints with each months new VT lesson.

– Purchase an inexpensive mini 4×6 photo album for your sisters to collect their quotes in each month. They will have a wonderful mini album full of inspiration by the end of the year!

Back to School with Tea Collection

Wednesday, August 27, 2014

Shop cute, quality, and unique back to school styles at Tea Collection this Fall! Read more about our family’s experience with their clothing after three years of back to school shopping with this amazing brand!

Back to School Styles from Tea Collection

It’s back to school time and we’re feeling ready for Fall with the bold and beautiful styles from Tea Collection! I’m all about finding ways to keep back to school shopping simple and stress-free! It’s no easy task trying to find items to suit each child’s style, that are age appropriate, modest and that I know will last, all while keeping costs down.

Back to School Styles from Tea Collection

We’ve been back to school shopping with Tea Collection for a number of years now and there are so many reasons we keep coming back to this brand!

What we love about Tea Collection
Bold, beautiful colors. I love the bold, unique styles that Tea Collection has to offer and am equally drawn to their wardrobe classics! I love that I can mix bold and beautiful colors and patterns with clothing staples that I know will last throughout the school year!
Back to School Styles with Tea Collection
Globally Inspired.  I love that Tea Collection’s styles are inspired by places around the globe, encouraging kids to embrace differences and learn more about the world around them!
Back to School Styles from Tea Collection
Mix and match. I love that they have so many cute, interchangeable outfits. Clothing items that match with multiple pieces means we get more wear out of our clothing! Everything is right there, no searching multiple stores for coordinating leggings, tees, etc. Here in Arizona the weather is hot, but at school the kids get cold indoors with the air conditioning blasting, so the fact that we can layer so many of their Tea clothes has come in really handy!
Back to School Styles from Tea Collection
Durability. Tea Collection clothing is built to last and that’s only been my experience with all the pieces we’ve tried! My kids can be hard on their clothes but we have YET to get a hole in the knee of my sons pants or the girls Tea leggings. Isn’t that amazing!? With Tea Collection I know my kids clothes are going to stand up, no matter what they put their clothes through during a typical school day.
Back to School Styles from Tea Collection
You can see all the Tea Collection styles that my kids chose for back to school this year below. If you’re still shopping for cute, well-made clothes for your kiddos this year — give Tea Collection a try and see what you think! A few of these items, including my favorite Bicycle Graphic Tee are on sale!
