Daily Organization Essentials

Daily Organization Essentials – when it comes to organizing my days, there are a few things I use over and over again to keep me on top of things.

For anyone who finds themselves agitated and unsettled when their home is out of order, here are 8 organization essentials that help me keep clutter in check!

As a wife, mother, and work-at-home creative, I know staying organized is essential. An organized day leads to an organized week, which leads to an organized life.

We become what we want to be by consistently being what we want to become each day.

– Richard G. Scott

Like any woman trying to keep several plates spinning, I’m not organized all of the time. My house gets messy, my sink is full of dishes on any given weeknight, and the laundry piles up, but I do know how I feel when I try to keep things organized and that’s why I continue trying.

When our family’s belongings and schedules are organized, home becomes an escape from stress and a space that fosters connection and creativity.

Peace around me (as opposed to clutter surrounding me) gives me peace of mind.

My Daily Organizational Essentials

Today I wanted to share a list of supplies that I use daily and re-purchase often to keep our home and my life in order. The organizing essentials I couldn’t function without.

At the end of the post, I’d love to hear what items you couldn’t live without!

Planners, To-Do Lists, Calendars

As much as I love technology, I’m a paper girl at heart. I find so much satisfaction in writing down to-do lists, mapping out my day, jotting down notes and crossing things off as they get done!

org-prints1web

I needed something to help me stay productive so I designed this system of organizational printables.  There is a weekly planner, a daily to-do list and schedule, a meal planner, and a 2016 calendar and you can download them all for free here. They’re in my favorite color and are full of white space making them extremely printer friendly.

Pens & Pencils

With a background in art, it’s no surprise I’m picky about my pens and paper. I write in my planner and jot notes in down daily, and to do that, I need a good set of pens. These Staedler Fine liner Pens are my current favorites. I also have this Le Pen set from Marvy Uchida and love them.

In my planner I write recurring appointments and commitments in pen, but the rest I record in pencil.  I just ordered these pencils because I love the color, so we’ll see how they do. I also love these Staedler WOPEX pencils. Dates and times can change frequently and I like being able to erase so that my planner stays neat and tidy.

A Label Maker

My label maker is something that gets used often in our home. I use it to label containers in our pantry, kids craft supplies, school supplies. You name it – we label it! I have this cute Epson LabelWorks Label Maker and it’s worked great for us. It’s perfect for creating professional-looking labels around our home.

organize1Containers

I love containers and storage solutions. My husband tends not to be as thrilled about these purchases as I am, but even he can agree that everything having a set place is essential in our home.

organizing2

We’re in a small rental at the moment, and I have to keep things in their designated space or things get cluttered quickly. We have places for homework supplies, for kids school papers and artwork.

organizing3

I keep my craft supplies in open bins and glass jars. I like things contained, but I also like to see what I have at a glance. I find this keeps me from spending money unnecessarily. Here are a few storage solutions I’ve found that work for me:

organize3

1| Chrome Locker Basket 2| Colorful Colanders 3| Fruit Basket 4| Raskog Cart 5| Small Clear Storage Containers 6| Desktop Carousel 7| Ball Jars 8| Galvanized Metal Carry-All

Notebooks / Paper Pads

I am a bit of a notebook collector. I use them all the time for jotting down inspiration, I keep them in my purse, and there’s always one out when I’m working on my to-do lists.

I love cute notebooks like these from My Minds eye but I also keep a well stocked supply of these for scratch pads by the phone, etc. I also use these Kraft Brown soft cover notebooks for jotting down to-do’s and other miscellaneous thoughts.

organize2

Phone / Timer

My phone is essential for keeping me organized. The timer on my phone is also something I use constantly throughout the day.I have a series of alarms that help keep me on track throughout the day. Reminders to eat a healthy breakfast, drink water or go for a run.

I also learned an amazing tip from my friend Crystal Wilkerson when it comes to staying productive: 20-minutes tasks. I have an ongoing list of to-do’s in my planner that includes tasks that I can get done in a short period of time. When I find these little windows of time I set my timer, get to work and get it done!

Free printable daily to do list and quick tips to make the most of your time and have a more productive day

I also use the timer to help me stay on task. It’s so easy to get distracted on social media or by anything that seems like a more immediate need. I’ll set it for 20 minutes, get done what I can in that amount of time, and move on to something else after that.

On occasion, I get so engrossed in a task that I actually need the timer to remind me to come up for air and evaluate what else is happening around me. By setting this 20-minute timer, I’m reminded to stop, take a break, grab a drink of water, and attend to other needs around the home and with our family.

I don’t just use a timer for me! This simple tool that has done so much to improve my children’s ability to focus and take responsibility for their activities.

My Last Greatest Secret

A collection of favorite organizing essentials wouldn’t be complete without my other greatest secrets to staying organized: strategy and consistency.

It takes a lot of trial and error to uncover systems that help keep your days in check. But I’ve found that by trying things and taking detailed mental notes on what really works for us, I’ve slowly arrived at systems that make life feel simpler and leave more room for joy.

And then by staying loyal to those systems—by using them consistently—I’ve come to find even more room in my life for that joy. I hope you’re finding it too.

You know I love to talk organizing supplies. (It might be one of my love languages!) So let’s hear it—

What supplies are essential to keeping your life in order?

Chocolate Ganache Heart Cookies

Simple shortbread cookies with a rich, chocolate ganache inside. These heart cookies are egg-free and have just 6 ingredients.

Simple shortbread cookies with a rich, chocolate ganache inside. Egg-free and just 6 ingredients!

Hi there! It’s Julie from Tastes of Lizzy T. I’m sharing our first recipe on Simple As That today and I couldn’t be more excited. I blog with my two daughters, Maddie and Kinslee. We love spending time together in the kitchen, creating everything from healthy, family-friendly dinner recipes to decadent desserts for special occasions. We love to travel, so you can travel along with us as we share pictures of our adventures. We make our home in Ohio, so escaping the brutal winters to warmer weather is one of our favorite things.

Simple shortbread cookies with a rich, chocolate ganache inside. Egg-free and just 6 ingredients!

If we girls are known for one thing amongst our friends, it’s our cookies. I knew a simple cookie recipe would be the perfect thing to share with you!

Simple shortbread cookies with a rich, chocolate ganache inside. Egg-free and just 6 ingredients!

Even if you are not a pro-baker, you can easily make these heart cookies and have them turn out beautifully.

The cookies themselves have just 4 ingredients: butter, powdered sugar, vanilla and flour. No eggs? You’re right! We have family members that have egg allergies, so finding a cookie recipe that doesn’t have eggs is priceless.

Simple shortbread cookies with a rich, chocolate ganache inside. Egg-free and just 6 ingredients!

Here’s a few hints for the cookies themselves:

1. Use real 100% butter. There’s no substitute when it comes to baking. I normally use salted butter.

2. Refrigerate the dough before you roll out the cookies. Divide the dough in half, press the halves into discs, then wrap them tightly in plastic wrap. Refrigerate for just 1 hour, then you’ll be ready to roll.

3. One of my favorite kitchen accessories is a pastry mat. I don’t have a huge kitchen, so I’m often rolling out cookies on the dining room table. I use a large silicone baking mat to easily roll out cookies and pie crusts. It keeps the messiness off the table and makes for an easy clean up.

These small heart cookies are filled with chocolate ganache. I used to be afraid of making chocolate ganache, mostly because I didn’t know how it was made. It’s so simple, though.

Here’s how to do it. Heat 1/2 cup heavy cream in a microwave-safe dish or cup. You want the cream to get hot, but not boiling. It only takes about 30-40 seconds in my microwave, but all microwaves are different. If the cream is so hot you can’t touch it, allow it to cool just a bit. Place 1 cup of semisweet chocolate chips in a large medium-size bowl, then pour the warmed cream overtop the chocolate chips. Cover the bowl with a plate or lid and allow it to sit for 3-4 minutes.

When you take the lid off, the chocolate chips should be mostly melted. Simply stir the chocolate and cream together until it is completely combined. This may take a few minutes, but it should be smooth, rich and lovely.

Allow the ganache to cool to room temperature. It will get to the consistency of thick frosting. Spread this on the bottom of a heart cookie, then top it with another cookie.

And there you have simple, sweet, heart cookies that would make a delicious gift for someone you love!

Author: Julie Clark
Recipe type: Dessert
Cuisine: American
Serves: 33 cookies
Ingredients
  • 3 sticks (1½ cups) salted butter, softened
  • 1½ cups powdered sugar
  • 4 teaspoons vanilla
  • 3 cups all-purpose flour
  • Chocolate Cream Filling:
  • ½ cup heavy cream
  • 1 cup semisweet chocolate chips
Instructions
  1. Preheat the oven to 325 degrees.
  2. In a bowl, cream the butter with an electric mixer.
  3. Add the powdered sugar and beat until the mixture is smooth.
  4. Add in the vanilla and mix well.
  5. Lastly, add the flour and mix just until thoroughly mixed.
  6. Divide the dough in half and flatten the dough into discs. Wrap each disc in plastic wrap and refrigerate for 1 hour.
  7. After the dough has been chilled, roll the dough on a floured surface to ¼" thick. Cut out small hearts (my cutter was about 1½-2" in diameter), or use whatever cutter you'd like. Continue rolling and cutting until all the cookie dough is used.
  8. Place the cookies on an ungreased cookie sheet and bake for about 14 minutes. The exact time will depend on exactly how thick your cookies are. Thinner cookies will take less time to bake. Remove them from the oven before the edges turn brown for the softest cookie.
  9. Transfer the cookies to a wire rack to cool.
  10. To prepare the chocolate cream filling, heat the heavy cream for about 30 seconds in the microwave. Do not allow the heavy cream to boil.**
  11. Place the chocolate chips in a medium-size bowl and pour the heated cream over the chocolate chips. Cover the bowl with a plate or a lid and allow it to sit for 3-4 minutes.
  12. Mix the chocolate chips and the cream together until the cream is completely mixed in with the chocolate. The ganache should be completely smooth.
  13. Allow the ganache to cool to room temperature.
  14. Spread about a teaspoon of ganache on a heart cookie and top it with another cookie to make a sandwich. Repeat with the remaining cookies.
  15. Store the cookies in an airtight container. These cookies also freeze well!
Notes
**If the heavy cream is too hot, it may burn the chocolate and make the chocolate seize. It should be heated, but not boiling hot.
***The amount of cookies this recipe makes depends on the size of your cookie cutter.

DIY Valentine’s Day Floral Decor – fill your home with love this Valentine’s day with a romantic floral centerpiece.

Hello all! How are you? I’m back with my first post for 2016. Since Valentine’s day is just around the corner, I made this beautiful flower decoration how to for you. You don’t need amazing florist skills to pull this one off, yet the result will look very elegant and professionally made.

DIY Valentine's Day Floral Decor

What I think is really beautiful about this decoration, is that you could easily reuse the idea and create a similar decoration for a party in a different shape and a less Valentineish color, or maybe make it into a hostess gift. I bet that last one will be pretty popular.

So let’s get started, shall we?

DIY Valentine's Day Floral DecorDIY Valentine's Day Floral Decor

The whole tutorial is pictured and described below. I’ll just go through the materials you will be needing.

Materials

50 roses. (I bought 50 short stemmed roses at my local food market and was lucky enough to get them all for around 12 dollars. Don’t bother buying long stemmed ones, you will have to cut them anyway

knife
scissors
pins
2 x blocks of flower foam
bucket for soaking flower foam
large clear plastic bag ( I used one of those big garbage ones. They are nice and thick to work with.
paper heart (make one that will fit the width and length of the 2 foam blocks, when lined up against each other.
cardboard heart. (use the paper heart as template)
burlap (you will need a square, about 3-4 times the size of your paper heart. Same with the plastic)
ribbon of your choosing

Now with everything prepared, go on and create a smashing Valentines decoration

This decoration works really well on a coffee table. At that height the shape really stands out and you can fully enjoy the massive collection of roses.

Like I said in the beginning; this is perfect if you like to create you own hostess gift. And what woman doesn’t appreciate something flowery and homemade. I hope you enjoyed this tutorial. Let me know if you have any questions.

In the beginning of February, I will have some free valentines card available for download on my blog, so stop by if you like.

Have a beautiful day everyone.

Hi! It’s Kara from A Kailo Chic Life and I am so excited to show you how to make these super cute and simple key chain heart Valentines. My daughter just started Kindergarten and apparently key chains are all the rage. The kids at her school can’t seem to have enough of them hanging off of their backpacks.  I thought it would be fun to add to their collection by getting my daughter in on the Valentine making action and having her create “You Make My Heart Skip a Bead” heart key chain Valentines for all her friends.

Perler Bead Key Chain Heart Valentines

Supplies

  • Perler beads
  • Heart shaped bead plate
  • Ironing paper
  • Key rings and large 8mm jump rings (both available in the jewelry section of most craft stores)
  • This free printable

5 Photography Projects to Try In 2016

Sunday, January 17, 2016

These five photography projects have major power to get you out of a photography rut, improve your technical skills, hone your personal style, and remind you why you fell in love with the camera in the first place!

I believe that creativity is a muscle and if you don’t use it, it will atrophy. Here are 5 photography projects to try this year that will help you improve your skills and stretch those creative muscles!

As a photographer, I can find it challenging to stay motivated. If I put my camera down, it can be hard to pick it back up. I’m guessing I am not alone in this; I hear photographers talk about it all the time. It can also be hard if photography is your profession. Sometimes I associate my camera with work. It wasn’t always this way and there are times when I need to shoot for myself, to grow as an artist and remember why I started taking pictures in the first place.

5 Photography Projects to Try In 2016

I believe that creativity is a muscle and if you don’t use it, it will atrophy. The best way that I have found to get out of a creative slump or to improve my skills is by participating in a photography project. I recently finished a #365 project and did not miss a single day for an entire year.  I am very proud of this accomplishment (full disclosure – I often start one on January 1st and never make it to February), and it was a very rewarding experience. I thoroughly enjoyed it and am doing it again this year. I could see as the year went on that I was improving in areas that needed it, and I was thinking out of the box more than I normally would.

My advice – start a photography project, you will not regret it.

5 Photography Projects to Try in 2016

5 Photography Projects to Try In 2016

1. #366 – Take a picture every day for an entire year. The premise is simple. Document each day for an entire year. The thing that I love about this project is that it forces you to see things differently. There are often days when I’m convinced that I have nothing to take a picture of, but then I will notice how the light is falling in the room or how pretty the vase of flowers looks on the table. You can use any kind of camera you like, I switched between my DSLR and my camera. I kept track of mine using an app called Collect. I tried a few, and this one was the simplest and I liked how it saved everything to the cloud.

1 Second Everyday – August 28 – December 31, 2015 from Bree Hester on Vimeo.

2. One Second Every Day – If you are thinking about trying out video, this is a great project to try. You shoot one second of video every day. I use the 1SE app to collect and keep track. At the end of the year, you have a really fun 6 minute film that will be a keepsake forever. This project was the springboard for me to fall in love with making family films. I began this project in August and started again on the 1st. You can see my clips here.

3. #ColorColourlovers – A color hunting adventure from Xanthe Berkeley that focuses on a different color each week. This year’s project starts today and lasts for 6 weeks and runs quarterly. I’m going to add this one because it might be a challenge. It is pretty dreary and grey where I live. Find out more here.

4. #Imperfect366 – The rules are simple for this one, give up taking perfect photos. Use whatever camera you like, DSLR, phone, whatever camera is in your hand is the best one for the job. The only rules – there are no rules.

5. 10 on 10 – On the 10th of the month, share 10 photos. I’ve seen people share random images taken from one day, or will take a photo each hour. This is a great low key project that is not a huge time commitment because it is just one day a month. Here are some examples – Erika Ray – Fat Mum Slim – A Bit of Sunshine

A few other ideas – focus on learning a new skill like flash, stop motion, portraits, capturing video, or focus on new editing techniques.  The possibilities are endless, and the only limitations are your imagination.

This chocolate covered strawberry smoothie is just as delicious as it sounds, and it would make the perfect breakfast to kickoff your Valentine’s Day celebrations. Yep, I said breakfast! It really is healthy enough to be breakfast for the whole family! Protein from the milk, healthy fruit, and just a few extra chocolate chips for fun. The kids will think you’re making them a special treat, no need to tell them the truth. 😉

The only extra work you’ll need to do for this smoothie is to freeze some ripe bananas. You can make it with fresh bananas, but frozen bananas really add to the creamy texture. I like to chop a big bunch of rip bananas into 1/2 inch segments and lay them flat on a cookie sheet or large plate lined with parchment paper to freeze. Then I dump them into a ziplock bag to keep in the freezer. Since the individual segments are frozen separately is is easy to get out what I need when I make a smoothie or shake.

Instructions

Slice apple. Lay sliced piece face down on plate.

Cut two grapes in half length-wise. Trim off ends. Use these for the turtles legs, place them on the plate on either side of the apple slice.

Cut one more grape in half length-wise and trim a small portion off one end.

Spread a small amount of peanut butter on candy eyeballs to “glue” them to the grape. You could also use nutella or honey to attach the eyes if someone in your family has a peanut allergy.

Place the grape with the eyeballs on the plate for the turtles face and you’re ready to enjoy a tasty snack!
