Easy Breakfast and Dinner Calzones

Thursday, December 17, 2015

This is a sponsored post written by me on behalf of The Hillshire Brands Company. All opinions are entirely my own.

Easy Breakfast and Dinner Calzones – These delicious and easy breakfast and dinner calzones are sure to be a hit with the family! Fill them up with your favorite pizza toppings; we add sausage to ours and they are delicious! Keep reading for two variations of these easy, loaded calzones.

Today I’ve got two tasty variations of an easy recipe that you’ll want to add to your meal rotation ASAP. I love it when I find a new recipe that the whole family enjoys and asks for again and again. These calzones are a new family favorite.

Easy Pepperoni and Sausage Calzones

These pepperoni and sausage calzones are as easy as it gets. My kids love helping in the kitchen and this recipe is great one to get them involved with.

These delicious and easy breakfast and dinner calzones are sure to be a hit with the family! Fill them up with your favorite pizza toppings; we add sausage to ours and they are delicious!

There’s no precise measuring, no eggs shells that will end up in the bowl—just easy, kid-friendly steps they’ll love helping with, from filling the calzones with their favorite ingredients to pinching the edges closed with a fork to brushing the tops with melted butter.

These delicious and easy breakfast and dinner calzones are sure to be a hit with the family! Fill them up with your favorite pizza toppings; we add sausage to ours and they are delicious!

The ingredient that gives these calzones a bit of an edge is the Jimmy Dean® pork sausage that can be found in a variety of different flavors in the refrigerated section at Walmart. (What is it about sausage that always takes a recipe to the next level?!)

Easy Calzones

To add some extra flavor to our calzones we brushed the tops with melted butter then sprinkled ranch seasoning on top. I love that little ranch kick.

These delicious and easy breakfast and dinner calzones are sure to be a hit with the family! Fill them up with your favorite pizza toppings; we add sausage to ours and they are delicious!

When your calzones are out of the oven you can enjoy them dipped in marinara sauce or ranch dressing. Serve with a healthy side salad, and you’ve got another dinner on the table!

Note: One container of Pillsbury Pizza dough will make 4-5 medium-sized calzones.

The possibilities are endless with how you can enjoy these little pockets. The savory dinner calzone is one way, or you can try these hearty breakfast calzones.

Easy Egg and Sausage Breakfast Calzones

I don’t know about your house, but at ours school mornings can be crazy. I want to be able to get my kids a rounded breakfast, but it’s often cold cereal when we’re struggling to get out the door on time. Enter these delicious breakfast calzones, which help me take a weekday breakfast from “good” to “great.”

Filled with scrambled eggs, sausage and cheese, these easy breakfast calzones are a filling breakfast you can eat on the go.

Filled with scrambled eggs, sausage and cheese, they’re a filling breakfast that kids can eat on the go. What I love most is that they freeze so well and can be reheated and eaten on the crazy mornings.

So when you’re struggling to get the kids out the door with all their homework signed and your sanity in tact, send them off with one of these breakfast calzones and you can rest easy knowing they had a breakfast that will keep them full until lunch.

Ingredients

Scrambled Eggs

Mozzarella Cheese

Jimmy Dean Regular Pork Sausage

1/4 C. Melted Butter

Directions

Scramble eggs.

Prepare sausage and pizza dough according to the recipe above.

Layer eggs, cooked sausage and mozzarella cheese inside dough.

Fold in half; pinch edges closed with a fork.

Brush top lightly with melted butter.

Bake at 350 degrees for 10-12 minutes or until golden brown.

Filled with scrambled eggs, sausage and cheese, these easy breakfast calzones are a filling breakfast you can eat on the go.

We tend to keep our breakfast calzones pretty basic, using eggs, sausage and mozzarella cheese, but you might think about adding fresh peppers or topping with salsa. I love avocados and I think some sliced avocados with these calzones would make a delicious, hearty breakfast.

If you’re making a batch, consider doubling it so you can freeze some to have on hand. The sausage and pepperoni calzones would also be perfect for kids lunches.

I hope you enjoy this quick and easy calzone recipe. If you give them a try, you’ll have to let me know what kind of fillers your family loved best. Visit joytothemeal.com for more fabulous recipes this holiday season and the rest of the year!

Simple, DIY, Silhouette Keepsake Ornaments

Tuesday, December 15, 2015

As a parent, have you ever wanted to freeze time? These simple, DIY, silhouette keepsake ornaments may not help you freeze time, but they will at least allow you to capture it—as you display your children’s profiles year after year on your Christmas tree.

These simple, DIY, silhouette keepsake ornaments will help you capture a moment in time as you display your children's profiles year after year on your Christmas tree.

These simple, silhouette keepsake ornaments are some of my most treasured ornaments hanging on our Christmas tree this year.

These simple, DIY, silhouette keepsake ornaments will help you capture a moment in time as you display your children's profiles year after year on your Christmas tree.

Not only do they make beautiful ornaments for your own tree, they would make a perfect gift for grandparents. Below you’ll find step by step instructions, including a quick video tutorial, to help you create your own silhouette ornaments.

I hope yours bring a smile to your face like ours do for me!

These simple, DIY, silhouette keepsake ornaments will help you capture a moment in time as you display your children's profiles year after year on your Christmas tree.

Supplies

White Cardstock

Ribbon or Twine

Scissors

Clear Plastic Ornaments

Photoshop Elements

Pencil

How to Create the Silhouette

  1. Take a photo of the side profile of your subject. This photo doesn’t need to be anything fancy, just make sure the edges are crisp and clear.
  2. Open your photo in Photoshop or Photoshop Elements.
  3. Select the pen tool and trace along the edge of your portrait. Use the zoom tool to get in closer on areas with more detail. Trace carefully so your lines are smooth.
  4. Once you’ve traced around the all the parts of the image that you want to be in your silhouette, right click your mouse and choose Make Selection.
  5. Click Edit –> Copy.
  6. Now create a new document the size you want your final silhouette to be when printed. Click File –> New, and select the size you want the document to be.
  7. Click Paste and paste the selection you made on the side profile image into the new document.
  8. When the selection is pasted in the new document, fill it with black by clicking Select –> Load Selection –> Edit –> Fill –> Black.

If you’d like, you can add the child’s name and/or date underneath the image.

The video below shows how I created one of our silhouettes from start to finish.

How to Create the Ornament

Once your silhouette is finished, you’re ready to create the ornament itself. Print out the silhouette on a piece of white cardstock.

When cutting out your silhouette, cut in a circle and leave a small tab at the top (pictured below.) This tab will help when positioning the silhouette inside of the ornament and will anchor it so it stays in place once inside.

These simple, DIY, silhouette keepsake ornaments will help you capture a moment in time as you display your children's profiles year after year on your Christmas tree.

For reference, the width of my silhouettes when printed and cut out measured approximately 72mm (just shy of 3 inches), and they fit perfectly inside an 83mm plastic ornament.

These simple, DIY, silhouette keepsake ornaments will help you capture a moment in time as you display your children's profiles year after year on your Christmas tree.

Remove the top portion of the ornament. It comes off easily.

These simple, DIY, silhouette keepsake ornaments will help you capture a moment in time as you display your children's profiles year after year on your Christmas tree.

Gently roll the cardstock silhouette around a pencil.

These simple, DIY, silhouette keepsake ornaments will help you capture a moment in time as you display your children's profiles year after year on your Christmas tree.

Place it inside the ornament. Use the pencil or your finger to carefully flatten out the cardstock  so it lays nicely inside the ornament. Replace the top. Tie a piece of ribbon or twine to the top to hang the ornament, and you’re finished!

These simple, DIY, silhouette keepsake ornaments will help you capture a moment in time as you display your children's profiles year after year on your Christmas tree.

I love seeing our children’s sweet profiles on our tree, and in black and white, I think they add a nice classic but modern punch to our holiday decor.

In fact, we’re enjoying our ornaments so much that I could see this becoming a new tradition! Imagine how much fun it would be to watch their profiles change year after year.

Enjoy!

5 Ways to Simplify Christmas This Year

Sunday, December 13, 2015

Want to stress less and love more this holiday season? Here are 5 ways to simplify Christmas this year — and every year after!

Want to stress less and love more this holiday season? Here are Want to stress less and love more this holiday season? Here are 5 ways to simplify Christmas this year — and every year after!

It was in a small island home in the middle of the Caribbean Sea that our family learned that less can mean so much more at Christmas.

To my surprise, fewer presents, simpler traditions, and a few handmade decorations translated to the most joyful Christmas our family has ever celebrated.

Thankfully, I’ve learned in the five years since we’ve been back in the States that you don’t have to move to a remote island to capture the spirit of a simple Christmas. Here are five things you can do this year to stress less and love more this holiday season.

5 Ways to Simplify Christmas This Year

1. Limit those to-do’s. Ask yourself, “Will this create meaningful memories?” And more importantly, “Will this add to the peace of the season or take away from it?”

2. Plan ahead. For me, the biggest thing to help instill calm into the holidays is to get started early on my to-do list. No matter how much you scale back on the to-do’s, some tasks (like shopping for family gifts or planning the food for a family gathering) are inevitable. Thankfully, nothing reduces stress and anxiety like early preparation! I aim to finish the bulk of my to-do’s by November 30th.

3. Spend less, do less. Another big stressor during the holidays is finances. Giving yourself permission to spend less and do less—like skipping the expensive holiday card or dialing down your gift budget—will leave you with more mental and emotional capacity to really soak in the season.

4. Get the kids on board. Early in the season, we gather our family and discuss what kind of Christmas we want to have. We talk about the feelings we want to experience and brainstorm ways to get there—without going overboard. Helping your children catch the vision and simplify Christmas will mean more understanding and contentment for everyone.

5. Keep coming back to your “why.” When the hustle creeps in, try to ground yourself again by remembering why you want the kind of season you want. For some that may be to feel closer to Christ; for others it may be to find more time and connection with your family. (For many of you, it may be both!) Keep holding on to that longing — that desire for a slower, more meaningful season — and you’ll find it.

A SIMPLER HOLIDAY SEASON

What if you could enjoy a calm, unhurried holiday season filled with more memories and less overwhelm? Hint: you can.

Because I genuinely want you to find more awe and wonder (and less stress and overwhelm!) this December, I wrote a 12-day email course designed specifically for busy moms: 12 Days to a Simpler Holiday Season.

I would LOVE to have you join our community of women who are dedicated to re-making the holidays this year.

Let’s learn together, plan together, and support each other.

And let’s design a holiday season unlike any we’ve had since becoming moms.

Hand-lettered 2016 Calendar Printable

Sunday, December 13, 2015

Happy December everyone! It’s me Annika, stopping by with this year’s last post for Simple As That. It has been really fun creating posts for you guys this past year, and I hope you had some good use out of my creative ideas.

You are all probably very busy at the moment, prepping for Christmas and decorating your beautiful homes, but I do hope that you treat yourselves to a little downtime as well.

Today I have a little Christmas present for you. Some of you may have noticed from my previous posts, that I love hand-lettering. I actually just opened an Etsy store with a collection of hand-lettered prints, and you are very welcome to stop by if you like.

Hand-lettered 2016 Calendar Printable

Anyway, back to your Christmas present. Since we are soon to be entering 2016, I thought I would create a hand-lettered wall calendar for you. I was a little inspired, when Pantone, about two weeks ago, announced the 2016 color of the year, or rather colors. Usually it’s only one color, but 2016 will have two. They are called Rose Quartz and Serenity and I felt like giving the calendar a splash of these colors.

Here are a couple of images from Pantone’s Instagram illustrating the colors.

You can download the calendar in either A4 or Letter size, and scale to A3 and Tabloid size when printing. It comes in two colors as well. I added a more neutral colored example of the calendar for those of you who are not that into the pink and blue hues.

Thinking Beyond Toys: Alternative Gifts for the Holiday Season

Friday, December 11, 2015

If you would like to give your loved ones gifts that will be enjoyed longer than the usual toys and trinkets, here are some great alternative gifts for the holiday season.

If you would like to give your loved ones gifts that will be enjoyed longer than the usual toys and trinkets, here are some great alternative gifts for the holiday season.

Five years ago, our perspective of the holidays changed forever when we left everything familiar to us and moved our family of six to a tiny island in the middle of the Caribbean Sea.

Our Christmas was incredibly simple that year — of necessity.

We borrowed a small tree and decorated our home with paper snowflakes and festive artwork the kids made. We exchanged the few gifts we could find for each other on a small island, and we spent the rest of the day playing on the beach as a family.

It was a foreign holiday experience for us (literally and metaphorically!), but it became our most treasured.

This year, as I reflect on those special moments, I’m filled with a desire to recreate some of that simplicity.

One of the best ways I know to do that is by buying gifts that reflect our values.

Gifts that create memories, not clutter.

Because I genuinely want you to find more awe and wonder (and less stress and overwhelm!) this December, I wrote a 12-day email course designed specifically for busy moms: 12 Days to a Simpler Holiday Season.

Don’t miss out—be the first to know when the course is available!

If you, too, would like to give your loved ones gifts that will be enjoyed and remembered longer than the usual toys and trinkets, here are some great alternative gifts for this holiday season.

Many of you contributed to this list in a thread on Facebook. Thank you! I’m so happy to share your ideas — and some of your words — here today. Enjoy!

If you would like to give your loved ones gifts that will be enjoyed longer than the usual toys and trinkets, here are some great alternative gifts for the holiday season.

Gifts that Inspire Curiosity

Museum membership, aquarium passes, and zoo memberships are great for the whole family.

Art supplies. Check out our Ultimate Holiday Gift Guide for the Little Artist!

Butterfly Pavilion. I’ve always wanted to do this with the kids!

Binoculars. My kids love using binoculars and there are many types available that are kid-friendly. Perfect for taking on a hike, a road trip, or simply exploring in the backyard.

A beginner telescope for kids interested in exploring the night sky.

If you would like to give your loved ones gifts that will be enjoyed longer than the usual toys and trinkets, here are some great alternative gifts for the holiday season.

Gifts that Champion Learning

Books. I love gifting my kids books for Christmas. If you need some new ideas for a tricky age group, try this post on the best chapter book series for ages 7-12!

Magazine subscriptions. One of our family favorites is National Geographic Kids!

We invested in these Magnatiles as one of the kids’ “big” gifts last year and haven’t regretted it. They’re great for open-ended building, as well as shape and spacial recognition. Our Magnatiles are getting played with more than anything we purchased last Christmas.

Skill-building equipment, like a camera, a sewing machine, or a kitchen mixer.

Music and art lessons.

A book subscription with Bookroo. Curated book subscriptions from Bookroo are a wonderful way to get kids excited about books and instill a lifelong love of reading.

If you would like to give your loved ones gifts that will be enjoyed longer than the usual toys and trinkets, here are some gift ideas to encourage family bonding all year long!

Gifts that Encourage Family Bonding

Tickets to a surprise family vacation!

Two years ago we started trips as everyone’s gift, but on Christmas morning we still give stockings with candy, socks, and small items. The kids haven’t complained once. If the trip is scheduled for after Christmas, one thing in their stocking will be a clue as to what the trip will be. – Jessica Strickland

A family membership to a rock climbing gym, a kickboxing club, or a crossfit gym. These are a great way to encourage your kids’ adventurous sides.

Activities that promote health and togetherness, such as a family membership to a yoga studio or a local YMCA. You could also sign up for a 5K race!

If you’re local in Arizona or Texas they have these great POGO Passes that offer 12 month free access to a variety of local venues. It’s an amazing price value.  We’re getting them for the whole family this year!

Gifts that Encourage Giving

Through Heifer International, your family can purchase a domestic animal that will become a food and income source for a family in a developing country.

Organizations like Compassion International have gift catalogs from which you can select gifts and services, from literacy classes to a newborn package to home reconstruction.

Check with your local zoo to see if you can sponsor an animal. For an example, check out the San Diego Zoo’s “adopt an animal” program.

“Some zoos have animal sponsorship programs. You pick an animal and make a donation for that animal directly. The zoo usually sends you some little things about your animal like information and photos. It gives kids a sense of pride and ownership the next time they see ‘their’ animal!”  Tammy Boutin

Support the St. Jude gift shop, where you’ll find one-of-a-kind gifts and products designed with one thing in mind — to help St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital continue leading the way the world understands, treats and defeats childhood cancer and other deadly diseases.
