Make sure your child is wearing an art apron or old clothing because you are using permanent marker.

Give child an ornament and a fine point sharpie. Have them draw a picture directly on the ornament.

When they’re finished, write their name and date on the back side of the ornament.

Tie twine in a loop or use an ornament hook for hanging. Let child place their new creation on the tree.

Best Chapter Books and Series for Boys, Ages 7-12

Have you ever struggled to find book titles that really captivate your child? I know I have – particularly for my son. Here are six tips to help your child develop a love of reading, as well a comprehensive list of the best chapter books and series that are sure to help light that fire.

Have you ever struggled to find book titles that really captivate your child? I know I have - particularly for my son. Here are six tips to help your child develop a love of reading, as well a comprehensive list of the best chapter books and series that are sure to help light that fire.

My son (now 11) loves to read, but it hasn’t always been this way. It’s been through conscious effort and consistent reading habits at home, as well as finding books on topics that interest him, that his love for reading has grown.

I believe that a love of reading is best instilled at an early age. It’s a gift that will stay with them forever.

6 Tips to Help Your Child Develop a Love of Reading

1. Read with your child from day one.

2. Give books as gifts, both to your children and to their friends. Encourage them to pick out a favorite book to give to a friend for a birthday gift (or as part of one).

3. Create book-related traditions, like running a family book club or reading your favorite holiday books around the Christmas tree on Christmas Eve.

4. Seek out books on subjects they’re interested in, and include a variety of both fiction and nonfiction.

5. Expand your definition of reading. “Don’t worry if your son isn’t drawn to traditional boy classics like The Adventures of Tom Sawyer or Treasure Island. Magazines, comic books, baseball cards, newspapers, graphic novels, websites, joke collections — it all counts as reading.” PBS

6. Turn the reigns over to your child. Children thrive when we give them some control over the choices in their lives. Letting them take the lead with their selections can greatly nurture an interest in reading.

It can be a challenge to light the fire in boys, in particular. It’s well documented that boys are less inclined to read than girls.

Research also shows that if boys are able to progress their reading skills through subjects they enjoy, they will be more inclined to want to return to books and learn more — a simple idea but one that invariably works.

I’ve found that my son is drawn to story lines with clever humor and epic adventure. At times I’ve struggled to find titles that would really captivate him, but over the years we’ve developed quite the list of books that took him into another world and kept him turning page after page.

I hope you and your child (boy or girl) will find some new gems on this list.

To add snowflakes simply melt white chocolate wafers carefully in the microwave. Place melted chocolate in a regular ziplok baggie. Cut a tiny hole cut out of one corner of the baggie and use it to draw a snowflake on the top of each cookie. Here’s a quick video to show you how to make them:

This recipe makes a huge batch, but they freeze really well, so they’re perfect for making ahead. We’ve got our cookies all made and will be giving them out to the kids teachers for Christmas. Yay for getting one more thing crossed off the holiday to-do list!

Simple Rustic Christmas Memory Tree

Sunday, November 1, 2015

Simple Rustic Christmas Memory Tree – the Christmas season is a magical time that’s all about making family memories. This simple, rustic tree celebrates those special moments from Christmas and throughout the year.

An ode to those moments that are most precious to us, this simple, rustic memory tree is a beautiful combination of photos and DIY ornaments.

It’s time for the annual Michael’s Dream Tree challenge and I’m so excited to participate for the first time this year.

We’re keeping things simple this Christmas and what better place to start than with the tree!

An ode to those moments that are most precious to us, this simple, rustic memory tree is a beautiful combination of photos and DIY ornaments.

On the Simple as That Facebook page a few weeks ago I mentioned that I was struggling with the thought of buying gifts this year. I feel like our family just doesn’t need anymore stuff and we’ve been contemplating forgoing gifts and planning a family trip instead. We feel strongly that we’d much rather invest our time and money into making family memories vs. buying things this year.

An ode to those moments that are most precious to us, this simple, rustic memory tree is a beautiful combination of photos and DIY ornaments.

I wanted to decorate this tree to reflect our intention of focusing on making memories and spending time, not money this holiday season.

Here’s a photo of the tree all lit up at night. Taking photos of a lit Christmas tree in low light can be tricky, but if you’re determined to get a beautiful shot of the tree this year, here are some quick tips.

An ode to those moments that are most precious to us, this simple, rustic memory tree is a beautiful combination of photos and DIY ornaments.

Christmas doesn’t need to be about fancy wrapped packages, elaborate meals or expensive gifts – it’s about the special memories we make as a family. With some simple, handmade ornaments this tree came together inexpensively and was a labor of love involving the entire family.

Picture Frame Ornaments

As a photographer, decorating with photos is one of my favorite things to do. Incorporating some photo frames in the tree was such a fun way to showcase some of our favorite family memories from the past year.

An ode to those moments that are most precious to us, this simple, rustic memory tree is a beautiful combination of photos and DIY ornaments.

It will be fun to switch out the photos from year to year. I love the personalized, sentimental touch the photos add to the tree.

Inexpensive tin ornaments, paper doilies and some old fashioned keys that I found in the dollar aisle (all at Michaels) compliment the photo frames perfectly.

DIY Silhouette Ornaments

I think these silhouette ornaments I made of the kids are my most favorite things on the tree and I’ll be sharing how you can DIY these simple ornaments in an upcoming post.

Simple DIY Silhouette Ornaments

Aren’t they pretty? I can see a new tradition of making these ornaments each year just beginning! I love how they turned out.

Mini Faux Canvas Print Ornaments

I also created these mini, faux canvas print ornaments. They were so easy to put together! Watch for a post with the quick how-to and the free printables to make your own coming soon.

Mini faux canvas ornaments

Our family picks a theme to follow each new year and the quote we’ll be focusing on in 2016 is “Collect Moments, not things.” It was with this quote in mind that I created all the elements for our memory tree.

Children’s Sharpie Art Ornaments

These ornaments were so fun for the kids and you really can’t get much simpler than drawing on white bulb ornaments with sharpies.

The result isn’t anything fancy, but they’re so personal and precious! I love my kids artwork and I smile every time I see these hanging on the tree. Add their name and date on the back and you have a darling Christmas keepsake.

Christmas Book Countdown

I couldn’t  finish telling you about our tree without mentioning the Christmas book countdown we do every year. It’s such a special tradition in our family – one my kids look forward to every year. You can read more about it here, but in a nutshell, we wrap up 25 Christmas books and beginning the first of December we open one per day and read them together as we countdown to Christmas.

Christmas Book Advent Countdown

We keep our books out in a bin or basket beside the tree for the entire month of December. This year I put them in this metal container I found at Michaels and added an old chair beside the tree as a special place for our treasured Christmas books.

Free printable Christmas countdown advent tags

I have some simple countdown tags that are perfect for wrapping books for this book countdown and you can download them here for free.

**Hint: When the hustle and bustle has died down and before you pack them away, wrap all your books so they’ll be ready when you pull them out the next year!

That’s it for now. Again, I’ll be sharing how-to’s on all the ornaments in the coming weeks so stop back by for those and give me a follow on Instagram, Facebook and Pinterest for more simple, meaningful Christmas inspiration this holiday season.

An ode to those moments that are most precious to us, this simple, rustic memory tree is a beautiful combination of photos and DIY ornaments.

From now until November 14, you can get FREE shippingon all Christmas trees that are 6ft or taller on Michaels.com!

How to Throw A Kids Gingerbread House Party

Thursday, October 29, 2015

How to Throw A Kids Gingerbread House Party –

Kids Gingerbread House Party

When I was a little girl, I used to make a gingerbread house with my grandmother every year. All of these years later I still remember how much I loved making our house together. It was one of the traditions that I wanted to continue to do with my own children. The truth of the matter is that making a gingerbread house is no small task. Even for someone like myself that bakes all. the. time. You need to plan well. The dough needs to chill, the pieces all need to the exact size, it takes a lot of time…. you get the idea. It got to the point where instead of liking to do this project with my kids, I dreaded it.

Instead of canning this tradition, it is one of the places where I got over myself and now happily take some store-bought help. I buy gingerbread house kits and don’t even bother making my own. I unwrap the pieces, set it up, and let the kids do all the work.

Now, the kid’s gingerbread house party is the highlight of my holiday season.

Kids Gingerbread House Party

The thing is, the kids really don’t care if I make the house myself or not. What they care about is spending time with me and doing something together.

Kids Gingerbread House Party

For the sake of complete and total honesty, I threw this party together in less than 2 hours – using things I had around the house (minus one trip my husband made to the grocery store for heavy cream. You can’t have hot chocolate without whipped cream.) I invited the neighbor kids over and they spent 3 hours making these houses. We listened to Christmas music, drank hot chocolate, and they loved every minute of it. I have never seen any of them more engaged or entertained for this long before. This may have been my favorite kid’s party ever.

Kids Gingerbread House Party

A little (and I really do mean little) prep work ahead of time makes this party so much fun and incredibly simple to throw.

Kids Gingerbread House Party

Tips for Throwing a Successful Kids Gingerbread House Party:

1. Buy each child a gingerbread house kit. I got mine from King Arthur Flour, but you can get them all over the place during the holiday season. I ordered them early in the season, but had no idea when we were going to use them. One particular afternoon when we found ourselves home without plans seemed like the perfect time to do this project.

2. Make extra royal icing. There is royal icing mix in the kits, but we ran out. I believe in being heavy-handed with the icing and using it for structure to keep the house together. It’s not a bad idea to make an extra batch or buy an extra royal icing mix. You can do it earlier in the day, making sure to keep it covered with a damp paper towel, or in an airtight container. I made each child their own piping bag fitted with a #2 tip. I closed them with a bag tie (or a rubber band) so the icing doesn’t come out of the top. Sit them upright in a glass.

3. Buy extra candy. The candy that comes in the kits isn’t always the most fun to play with. Supplement with things that are brightly colored and are different shapes. I added mini marshmallows, mini candy canes, peppermints. Basically, I shopped my cabinets. I would also add pretzel sticks, M&Ms, anything works here.

Kids Gingerbread House Party

4. Use cake boards to build the houses on. There is nothing worse than building a house and then realizing you need to move it. I have the kids build the houses directly on 10-inch cake boards. You can order them online or get them at any craft store.

5. Set it up before the kids come to the table. Each child had their own rimmed baking sheet with everything they would need on it. This serves two purposes. 1. Each child knows which pieces are theirs. (No fighting.) 2. It contains some of the mess. They are lots of little pieces, and this helped the kids keep it all together.

Having everything ready to go before the kids sat down was key in making this go as smoothly as it did.

6. Line the table with disposable tablecloths. I buy them at the dollar store and always have some on hand for crafting. When the kids are finished, just wrap it all up and throw it away.

DIY hot chocolate bar

7. Set up a snack area away from the house making. I set up a hot chocolate bar on the other side of the kitchen. The kids needed something to do while the icing hardened. They could get up and move around, which they really need to do since this project takes a few hours. I made a pot of homemade hot chocolate, whipped cream, crushed peppermints, and marshmallows. They are going to eat a ton of candy so you might want to counter it with some cheese and crackers and some fruit.

Tip – an insulated coffee pot is perfect for this. The kids could pump it out themselves. I used this pot so often last winter that I need to buy a few more.

diy hot chocolate bar

diy hot chocolate bar

8. Don’t micromanage – We built the structure of the houses together. I modeled how to actually build the house, then walked away. It took all of my strength to not micromanage and try to push them to make “pretty” houses. I’m so glad that I didn’t because they made houses that were so much better and more creative than I ever would have made. They were so proud of their creations. We had them on display and the kids showed everyone that came to visit us their house.

Kids Gingerbread House Party

9. Don’t worry about the mess – In truth, this really was a lot less messy than I thought it was going to be. Having the table covered went a long way in helping with the clean up. A quick sweep of the floor and a wipe down of the table was really the extent of it. I cut the tips off the piping bags and threw the bags in the trash, and wiped down the baking sheets. Clean up was max 20 minutes.

Kids Gingerbread House Party

10. Have fun! – Turn on some holiday music and get in the holiday mood. This is a great activity to start the holiday season and get in the spirit.

Happy Holidays!

Thanksgiving centerpiece “How to” and printable

Wednesday, October 28, 2015

Hi guys, Annika here. Wow, fall is really present at the moment. Colors are at their peak right now and it is so beautiful and I hope you are enjoying the season.
So Thanksgiving is coming up soon and while it’s a holiday we don’t officially celebrate here in Denmark, I think it is a beautiful tradition. I wanted to give you my take on how to create an easy and elegant DIY table decor for your thanksgiving dinner.
simpleasthat_blog_featured_image_00-compressor (1)
First part is about these really cute place tag printables I have for you. If you like the hand-lettred style, you’ll like these. They come in 4 different colors, so you can match it to the rest of your table decor. (download below)
Besides being very cute, these place tag has an additional function. I created them tag as little envelopes, with the idea, that it could be fun idea for your kids (and you) to write a small personal note to each person, joining your Thanksgiving dinner. It could be a different way to share what your kids or your family(as whole) felt was special about each particular person. It would be a lovely thing to let every person, that will be sharing thanksgiving with your family, know why you wanted them to be part of this special day. I also think it’s a great, little simple gift for guests to bring home 🙂

Any thanksgiving table needs flowers and I’m going to show you how to make a simple flower center piece. This decoration is very easy to make, rustic, but yet elegant, and you can make it to match your place tags. I used mostly flowers from the garden (love the idea of utilizing what I have), like hydrangeas, reeds and colored leaves. I then added some chrysanthemums and callas from the store to spice it up a bit. Also, chrysanthemums are long lasting and hydrangeas just get so beautiful when they start to dry a bit. So you can actually use both fresh and dried hydrangeas for this.
Below you can find a “how to” on the center piece and all the materials you’ll be needing.

I hope this gave you some inspiration and fun ideas for your thanksgiving table decorations.

I hope you all have a gorgeous November and a lovely Thanksgiving.

Slow Cooker White Chicken Chili

Tuesday, October 20, 2015

Slow Cooker White Chicken Chili – this is the perfect fall dinner recipe. Creamy, hearty, healthy, and the slow cooker does all the work!

This Slow Cooker White Chicken Chili is the perfect fall dinner recipe! Creamy, hearty, healthy, and all you have to do is sit back and let the slow cooker do all the work!

I absolutely love fall! The beautiful colors on the trees, the cooler weather, and especially warm soup or chili! There’s not much that’s more comforting than the smell of this white chicken chili cooking in the slow cooker all day. And, of course, cooking in your slow cooker is pretty much the easiest way to get a healthy dinner on the table. Slow Cooker White Chicken Chili - this is the perfect fall dinner recipe. Creamy, hearty, healthy, and the slow cooker does all the work!
Serves: 8 servings
Ingredients
  • 4 (6 ounce) boneless, skinless chicken breasts
  • 1 tablespoon butter
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1 medium onion, diced
  • 4 cloves garlic, minced
  • 2 (4 ounce) cans chopped green chilis
  • 1 pound dried great northern beans, rinsed
  • 8 cups low sodium chicken broth
  • 2-3 teaspoons ground cumin
  • ½ teaspoon paprika
  • ½ teaspoon cayenne pepper
  • salt and pepper to taste
  • 1 cup whole milk
  • 2 tablespoons masa (cornflour) or cornmeal
  • optional toppings: grated monterey jack cheese, sour cream, fresh cilantro, tortilla chips
Instructions
  1. Add butter and olive oil to a large skillet over medium heat. Sauté onions and garlic for 2-3 minutes. Add green chilis and cook for 1-2 more minutes. Set aside.
  2. Put chicken breasts and dried beans in the bottom of a large (6-7 quart) slow cooker. Add the sautéed onion mix and chicken broth, cumin, paprika, cayenne pepper, salt and pepper.
  3. Cook on low for 6-8 hours or on high for 4 hours. When there is 30 minutes to an hour of cooking time left, mix together the milk and masa and add to the slow cooker.
  4. When the beans are soft and the chili has thickened, shred the chicken with two forks, stir, and serve with your favorite toppings..

Apple Pie Breakfast Bowl – perfect for this lovely Fall season! Simple to make, healthy, and completely irresistible! I think your kids will love it, too!

Apple Pie Breakfast Bowl recipe

Hello! It’s Sara here, from Simply Happenstance! I’m thrilled to share with you this delicious Apple Pie Breakfast Bowl recipe with you.

Breakfast has always been my favorite meal of the day. I wake up hungry, eagerly awaiting a warm cup of coffee and a delicious dish to eat! However, like many of you, my day starts with getting my four kids prepared for the day and out the door to school. That doesn’t leave a whole lot of time for well-thought out breakfast dishes. In fact (I hate to admit it), but my kids usually eat toaster waffles, bowls of instant oatmeal, pieces of fruit, or breakfast bars since we are typically in a bit of a rush. Although those are the best I can do most days (which is okay!), I really love when I get a chance to feed them something more substantial, healthy, and homemade. It just makes my mama heart happy!

Apple Pie Breakfast Bowl Recipe

This Apple Pie Breakfast Bowl is mostly prepared the night before, in a mere matter of minutes. There is no mixer required… just a bowl and a spoon will do. (Keeping things simple is always a priority in our house!)

Apple Pie Breakfast Bowl Recipe

I’ve been craving an autumn breakfast, filled with the delicious flavors of apple pie. I decided to take my favorite chia seed pudding recipe (shared here), and top it with fall favorites!

Apple Pie Breakfast Bowl Recipe

The base of this bowl is a rich, creamy vanilla chia seed pudding. Greek yogurt, almond milk, pure maple syrup, a touch of vanilla, and loads of healthy chia seeds create the thick, slightly-sweet mixture. Sliced crisp apples, crunchy granola, dried cranberries, a dash of cinnamon, and a sprinkling of brown sugar top the pudding, making it the tastiest fall breakfast that your whole family will love!
