SMART Goal Setting Bookmarks

Sunday, June 12, 2022

I recently heard about the S-M-A-R-T goal setting acronym and loved it so much as it applies to the Children and Youth program.

I recently heard about the S-M-A-R-T goal setting acronym and loved it so much as it applies to the LDS Children and Youth program. Set smart goals and increase the odds of successfully achieving what you set out to accomplish! CLICK HERE + print the bookmarks.

SMART stands for specific, measurable, attainable, and timely. A truly smart goal will incorporate all of these elements and will greatly increase the odds of successfully achieving the goals we set out to accomplish.

SMART Goal Setting Bookmarks

I wanted to help my kids plan their own SMART goals so I made these little bookmarks to remind them of the 4 elements of a successful goal.

We printed these out and handed them to the kids in our primary along with a laminated goal sheet and a dry erase marker. They were a huge hit!

Anchored on the Rock of our Redeemer

Monday, August 24, 2020

I’ve had a few requests to make the printable for our back to school year theme from 2019-2020 available so I am adding a link to download the PDF below.

Our theme for that school year was “Anchored on the Rock of our Redeemer” and it was an amazing theme to study & think about as we went through the challenges we did during that school year.

We had a sports cancelled, a high school graduation not come together as planned – there were a lot of unforeseen wind and waves that could have knocked us off course. This theme was wonderful for our family for so many reasons! That quote from President Uchtdorf….isn’t it great!

“Life has a way of testing our anchors & tempting us to drift. Nevertheless, if our anchors are correctly placed in the rock of our Redeemer, they will hold— no matter the force of the wind, the strength of the tide, or the height of the waves.” – Dieter F. Uchtdorf

You can download a PDF black and white version of the theme that includes the quote from Dieter F. Uchtdorf by clicking the link below. You can also find our 2020-2021 back to school theme here if you’re curious what it is.

I hope you enjoy! xoxo Rebecca

2020 Back to School Theme - Be Still and Know that I am God printable.

Our 2020 School Year Theme

At the beginning of each school year I choose a new theme for our family to focus on throughout the next 12 months. School starts for us tomorrow.

I’ve been praying over this years theme for weeks and the inspiration finally came. It’s from Psalms 46:10 – Be Still and Know that I am God.

I know this is what our family needs to focus on right now.

2020 Back to School Theme - Be Still and Know that I am God printable.

Be Still & Know that I Am God

Amidst all the noise and competing voices in the world today I want my children to seek out peace and stillness.

It’s in those still spaces that I’ve come to know my Savior.

Where I’m able to filter out the clutter of opinions swirling around me & find the peace I’m seeking.

Noise and distraction can so easily keep us from seeing, hearing and recognizing the whispers of truth & comfort that come ever so quietly.

I think this craving for stillness & quiet is what draws me to the mountains.

It’s in the mountains that the pull of daily distractions fades away and I feel a closeness with my Father in Heaven.

2020 Back to School Theme - Be Still and Know that I am God printable.

Download Be Still & Know that I Am God Printable

Going on a hike isn’t requisite to escape from the chatter of the world around us.

We don’t have to summit a towering peak to know the peace so many of us are praying for right now.

I’ve found little pockets of stillness when I turn off my phone and watch the birds in the backyard, or do yoga in my living room as I watch the sun rise outside the window.

Wherever I am.

On the side of a mountain or sitting on my front porch swing…quieting the noise. Being still. That is what has allowed me to hear Him more fully in my life.

Intentionally making space for stillness is going to be a big part of our learning as a family this year.

End of the Year Reflection

At the close of the year I enjoy thinking back on the experiences that have brought me joy and the ways that I’ve grown through my experiences. I want my kids to see the value in this end of the year reflection and so I put together this simple Year in Review sheet for them each year.

Kids grow and change so quickly, recording the details that make them unique at whatever age they are is important.

This fill in the blank printable is an easy way for them to do that. My kids especially loved that they could illustrate their yearly story with the boxes provided.  These are our favorite coloring pencils for creative projects just like this one!

Use this Year in Review Printable for Kids as a jumping off point for some family discussion. Take the opportunity to talk with your kids about the past year (the ups and the downs) and things they’d like to improve on or change in the coming year. What a great time to pull out some photos and look through them and reminisce together.

This has become a fun yearly tradition for us. It will be so special to look back on them as the kids grow! What kind of New Year traditions do you have in your family?

Simple (yet beautiful!) Christmas Cards from Minted

Simple (yet beautiful) Christmas Cards from Minted.

This time last year was a season of letting things go for our family. After a stressful year and looking ahead to a cross country move I made the conscious decision to cross a few things off of my holiday to-do list. As much as I love doing Christmas cards, it just wasn’t meant to happen last year, and that’s ok.

This year, we’re settled in our new home and taking family photos and sending out cards felt like the perfect way to commemorate this new phase in our family’s life and to let friends and family know where we are now. Doing Christmas cards felt right and so I started searching on minted.com for the perfect design.

Simple (yet beautiful) Christmas Cards from Minted.

Minted is my go-to place to shop for Christmas cards and they certainly didn’t disappoint this year. They always have something to suit my simple, understated style. When you’re searching for card designs you can search by style and that made things super easy for me. I was of course drawn to the simple + minimalist category and I found what I wanted within minutes. I went with this Gilded Trees design and I just love the little hint of gold foil. My favorite thing about these cards just might be the photo collage I added on the back!

Remember to Keep it Simple

When it comes to Christmas cards, there are so many choices available and that can become overwhelming. Elaborate, flashy or expensive cards aren’t necessary to send our love.

If you want to send cards this year, but the thought is overwhelming to you, my advice is to keep it simple. Pick one photo, pick one simple (yet beautiful) design and be done.

To the recipient it’s the greeting and seeing your shining faces that means the most after all. It’s not about beautiful typography or how sparkly your card is – it’s about connecting with family and friends and letting them know you’re thinking of them this holiday season.

5 Simple But Effective Ways to Nurture Your Child’s Instinct for Kindness

Monday, October 7, 2019

Big tears streamed down her plump cheeks, and her small frame shook with each sob.

My kids and I had just arrived at the school drop-off area when we found my daughter’s little friend—a kindergartener—standing alone and afraid in front of the school.

She had just realized—as her dad pulled out of the parking lot—that she’d left her lunch and backpack in his car.

I hugged her, like anyone would, saying that I’d text her dad and that she could always get hot lunch that day.

“You’re only in kindergarten,” my daughter said to her as she rubbed her arm in a gesture of comfort. “We’re all still learning!”

I waited until our little friend’s shoulders had stopped shuddering and she’d wiped away some of the tears, and then I watched as my daughter linked their arms together and guided her toward the school. Up until the moment they were out of my sight, I could still see my daughter rubbing her friend’s arm in support.

I was touched by the solidarity my daughter had offered her friend, and I couldn’t help but pray that she never loses that innate compassion for others.

It also reminded me of all the people I know who haven’t been this lucky in their moment of need.

I have a friend whose son had to stop riding his middle-school bus because he was being picked on so badly. My friend and her husband now spend an hour and a half in the car each day driving him to and from school because they can’t trust that other kids will treat their son with the kindness we all deserve.

I have another friend whose daughter recently insisted she switch schools mid-year (can you imagine a 14-year-old asking for this?), because the “friends” she had grown up with suddenly decided to post unkind—not to mention, untrue—things about her on social media.

It’s the smallest moments, like the one I witnessed between her daughter and her friend, that become the oh-so-important building blocks of kindness and compassion that we need our children to take with them through the teen years and into adulthood.

As parents, here are five things we can do to nurture a child’s inherent instinct for kindness (before the world tells them that it’s cooler to be unkind).

5 ways to nurture your child's instinct for kindness

5 Simple But Effective Ways to Nurture Your Child’s Instinct for Kindness

1. Witness your child’s compassionate moments

Too often we only see the negative. It makes sense, because our brains are wired to scan our environments for possible threats—for the things that are going wrong. So it’s all too easy for us as parents to fixate on our kids’ weak areas in hopes of correcting them. But first, we need to see—to witness—their moments of kindness, empathy, connection, and compassion.

2. Praise your child for the empathy he or she showed another

Next, make sure your child knows that you witnessed their kind actions. Hug them. Tell them how proud you are. Make it a big deal.

And don’t just bring it up once. Instead, use those foundational experiences as cornerstones for the traits you hope they’ll develop. Remind them often of the amazing things you’ve seen them do, and make sure they know you have every confidence that they will continue to spread that goodness around.

3. Have regular conversations about what it would feel like to walk in someone else’s shoes

I think these conversations are one of the simplest, least pushy ways we can help our kids develop empathy. When you see someone in a situation your child might not be familiar with—whether it’s a panhandler on the side of the road, an aunt or uncle who has recently been diagnosed with cancer, or even a character you see in a movie—ask them questions about how they might feel if they were in that person’s shoes.

4. Teach them that every action they take is a vote for who they will become.

I’m passionate about helping my children live with vision. I want them to be able to step back and see a bigger picture—to see where they fit into the larger world and what path they want to take as they move into the future. Their actions today, big and small, offline and online, shape the people they will be.

5. Lead with kindness yourself.

There’s no one our children watch more than us. They see when we lack compassion for our spouse, our friends, or them. They see when we stir up drama in our own social circles or when we get offended at what someone else posts online. They listen, they watch, they soak it alllll in. Let’s make sure kindness is starting with us.

Let’s teach our kids that it’s cool to be kind and that being a positive digital citizen means treating others how they’d like to be treated—online and in real life. Learn more about how to be kind online with Google’s Be Internet Awesome Family Guide at g.co/BeInternetAwesome. You can even play Interland with your kids and put your kindness skills to the test at g.co/KindKingdom.

This list is a good start, but I know there are a hundred more ways to help our kids build their empathy muscles. What are you trying in your home?
